Washington Aug 13 The railroad executives reject the presidents settlement to bring strikers back only where vacancies exist or after reassignments while violence bar remains. Both majority and minority reports hinge on vacancies and alternatives with seniority left to the Labor Board.
Frank Murphy of 32 Central Street Lowell attempted to swim from Charlestown Bridge to Boston Light. Exhausted, he was picked up near Boston Light by two fishermen and brought to Houghs Neck then to Quincy police headquarters wearing only a bathing suit. He had jumped from the Charlestown bridge seeking a new challenge.
Arthur Griffith's death sends a shock through Dublin as prayers rise in Catholic churches for the repose of his soul. Mourning signs appear across the city after his role as a leading force behind the Anglo Irish treaty.
Messages of sympathy pour in from King George and Irish leaders as the Irish government vows to press on with Griffith’s work. The City Hall lies in state for Mr Griffith with Free State troopers on guard. funeral planned for next Wednesday while theatres and Horse Show openings proceed as scheduled.
Mrs. Warren G. Harding sent a hundred dollar check for Clover the horse in Catawissa Pennsylvania. A letter from Mrs. Harding expressed deep emotion over the owner Rev Dr Myers and the horse's long life of willing service and sacrifice for its master.
The Cunard Line liner Adriatic suffered an explosion and fire. James Corrigan, a second engineer, crawled into a gas filled hold to rescue injured crew members as passengers and relatives awaited full details of the dramatic incident reported from New York.
Mrs Evelyn Newcomb aged 70 died of natural causes after placing wildflowers on her late husband’s grave at North Parish cemetery in Haverhill. Her body was found by a search party near a haystack outside the cemetery gates.
Six year old Rose Garabedian, niece of driver Kochian Aspian, was killed when a truck tailboard she sat on tipped at a Watertown junction. Parents Mr and Mrs Hatchabour Garabedian of Brighton witnessed the fatal fall. Dr N J Kelly attended, but the child died almost instantly of a broken neck.
Arthur Buck of Lothian Road Brighton overheard a story titled Good Service Has Reward while in a barber's chair and won a Ford touring car driven to his home yesterday.
The statement from Mr. Buck claims ownership transfer of the vehicle to his wife. The remark appears in a continuing report and references further details on page four, fourth column.
In Pawtucket Rhode Island 7 year old Robert R Hunter son of Mr and Mrs James Hunter was killed when a street car split a switch crossed a sidewalk to Sun day school and pinned him to a tele graph pole His 56 year old brother William narrowly escaped injury Motorman D Edward Bridge and conductor John B Manning were aboard the car.
A Providence father confronts police after his daughter M. A. C. is exposed in a Boston paper for seeking a husband willing to pay $1000 to aid her crippled father and bring the family from Canada. He says the tale is fabrication, the family does not live in Canada, and the girl will return home with her parents. Police helped locate her and the family plans to return to Providence with the matter resolved.
Yesterday's temperature readings at Thompson's Spa show a daily progression with early morning values around 64 to 68 degrees. Afternoon highs reached the upper 60s to mid 70s, while the late evening settled near 68 degrees, averaging about 69.
In Salem New Hampshire on August 18 a large automobile truck plunged down a 12 foot embankment, overturning and sending 35 passengers free. Thirteen injured were members of Boston Ward 6 Democratic Club and taken to Lawlor Hospital in Methuen.
The most seriously hurt was Mrs. Rose Foye of 111 A Norwich Street Boston who remains in hospital with probable concussion. Other injured include Mrs. Agnes Reardon of 45 Dedham Street and Mrs. Mary Tedder and daughter Ruth of 1290 [incomplete address].
American League saw Cleveland 3 Detroit 2 and Chicago 9 St Louis 3. National League results included New York 4 Boston 2 and Cincinnati 5 Pittsburgh 4 in 10 innings. Eastern League contests featured Springfield 3 Bridgeport 2 and Worcester 33 Albany 4 in a pair of games.
Mayor Curley and District Attorney O'Brien joined about 5000 Irish sympathizers at a commemorative gathering on Boston Common honoring Harry Boland and Cathal Brugha as martyrs. The crowd cheered for the Irish Republic and for Eamonn De Valera amid a 2000-strong procession led by Austin Winston.
A fire at Roundhouse No 8 in Portland ignited by suspected incendiary causes two blasts that rocked nearby houses and destroyed 18 locomotives from Boston and Maine Maine Central and Portland Terminal. Firefighters faced further explosions as the blaze spread, threatening lives and prompting continued coverage on page 8S.

Southern New England and eastern New York expect generally fair weather with little temperature change Monday and Tuesday. North of Sandy Hook will have moderate southwest and west winds and fair conditions Monday. From Sandy Hook to Hatteras expect moderate easterly winds and overcast conditions Monday.
Moderate temperatures are expected to persist through today and tonight with fairly good weather conditions. The pattern suggests continued pleasant conditions without sharp changes in temperature or precipitation.
