Prominent West End stockholders publish a circular urging ratification at an upcoming meeting. They cite Mr. Storrow’s argument that the matter pits two public service corporations against the public, calling the public a partner and warning the West End must recognize that role.
Influential West End Street Railway stockholders and trustees back a merger with the Elevated road, deeming it fair to the West End. Governor Foss comments from the Boston Post, heading to San Francisco for his son's wedding, warning of consequences for West End stockholders and noting an extraordinary session may follow if the merger act is not accepted by September 6.
The Governor speaks plainly on the West End Elevated merger and predicts a publicly satisfactory outcome. He says hostile stockholders will be swept along by public opinion and that in a month many opponents will concede the merger at seven percent is proper. Continued on page 4 First column.
Robert Sinclair age 39 of 35 Falmouth Street arrested in Kansas City as a fugitive from justice. Oakland California police charge him with larceny of 400 dollars. He was arrested in Boston on June 24, released on bail, then disappeared during extradition proceedings.
Rome Aug 13 The condition of Pope Pius today was almost stationary but with a tendency toward slow gradual improvement. Temperature 98.7 degrees. Gouty knee pain remains but is less severe than yesterday. He took more nourishment and his strength was well maintained.
The pope’s condition is not yet fully hopeful for quick recovery but physicians believe if no relapse occurs he could leave the bed next week. He will face a lengthy convalescence as he rests in a chair and receives visitors including Cardinal Merry del Val and Monsignor Bissett. He seeks reports on Vatican affairs and wishes to return to his desk soon.
Amedee Demers aged 18 died after a dive from a canoe into Lake Quinsigamond Worcester. He disappeared on the last dive while two companions watched and the body had not been recovered by night.
Newport reports Miss Julia Estelle French heiress eloped with chauffeur Jack Geraghty last Tuesday. Pursued by her aunt Mrs Elsie French Vanderbilt and aid from Newport police and Boston detectives in three cars, the chase lasted into Wednesday morning.
Social leader Mrs Vanderbilt pursues her eloping niece through night in woods. The couple lost the way, spent the night on woodland roads, and their auto broke down. Had Geraghty and bride not mistaken the road they might have been overtaken on the way to Putnam. The pair are now honeymooning in Springfield.
Detroit and Chicago games plus St Louis and Cleveland results listed. National standings show Chicago and St Louis tight. Cicotte slated to pitch against the Athletics with Lajote set to challenge Cobb as top batter. New York swims record as Pitonof covers 25 miles in just over eight hours and Sheldon wins Jeffries Point event. Williams sets Charles River record while Collins wins motor paced bicycle race and Karina takes the challenge cup ocean race.
Col John Jacob Astor and fiancee Miss Madeleine Force joined Miss Katherine Force and Mrs Force at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport this morning. Parishioners reportedly number about 400 in attendance.
Dr Merrill, brother-in-law of Mrs John Nicholas Brown, preached on Individual Responsibility from Ezekiel 3 17 urging the wealthy summer residents to do their fair share. He stressed deliverance of Gods message and the duty of service, calling them to heed God's voice.
In Coatesville Pennsylvania on August 13 a mob carried Zachariah Walker from a hospital cot and burned him alive near town after he killed Edgar Rice, a Worth Iron Mills special policeman. Witnesses say the crowd included many women and the suspect begged for mercy before the deadly blaze.
A posse cornered the fugitive this afternoon after a lengthy countywide search. Cornered in a cherry tree, he used his last bullet to shoot himself in the mouth and fell from the tree. He was taken to the hospital under guard as a crowd of nearly 1000 gathered outside. Leaders could not proceed.
New York August 13 Ethel Barrymore and Russell Griswold Colt say they have never been apart nor quarreled and have no plans for legal action. The actress and broker spoke with a reporter at their country home in Mamaroneck New York. Their baby Samuel P Coit will join them there tomorrow.
Forecast calls for fair conditions in Boston and vicinity on Monday and Tuesday with light to moderate southwest winds. In New England, the outlook is fair through Monday, warmer Tuesday in the west, with light to moderate winds mainly from the southwest.

Four killed and about 30 injured when the Pennsylvania 18 hour train from Chicago to New York ran off the track near Fort Wayne at 6 30 pm. The two engines struck a freight engine as they left the rails and the wreck left twisted iron and wreckage.
A passenger train wreck toppled multiple cars into a ditch. Baggage car, smoker, buffet, and two sleepers overturned while diners and smokers bore the brunt. Police and fire departments, ambulances, and hospital victims rushed to the scene as crews worked to clear tracks and count the dead.
Newport Aug. 13 Harold Vanderbilt and Eleonora Sears are in Newport as an engagement is hoped for. Sears arrived from Boston and met Vanderbilt who drove her to Marblehouse, home of Vanderbilt and Belmont, where she will stay two weeks. She will help plan season invitations and attend events with Vanderbilt and Belmont hosts in town.
Miss Charlotte Imminck of Wayland lies dying at Wal tham Hospital while her sister Alvina, 24, is badly bruised after an auto crash at Dead Man's Curve in Wayland yesterday. Three autos were involved as the victims walked from a church along the State road. Westbound vehicles sped to pass atop Willard Hill creating a blocked, double S curve.
Eastbound cars clash as two autos fail to avoid a narrow road bend. Two girls walking along the center edge a stone wall five feet high. A third vehicle swerves and crashes into them. Dr. A W Tyler of Oakdale drives with his wife another woman and a baby aboard. His instinct is to save them.
President Taft was involved in a rear end collision in Melrose as his auto struck a car carrying Mr. and Mrs. Jepson and others. The Jepson car occupants were frightened but unharmed, and Taft ordered towing of the damaged vehicle while Major Butt arranged for the bill to be sent to the appropriate party.
