Lawrence faces mass unemployment as mills close, with up to 12,000 workers set to be idle tomorrow. The city, built on manufacturing, shelters them in tents along the Merrimac riverbanks as they await resumption, while alternative livelihoods are scarce and morale mixed.
A large industrial district endured a planned suspension of operations affecting up to fifteen thousand mill workers for about a fortnight. City streets and churches reflected the mood, with early rising crowds, charitable promises, and cautious optimism that business would rebound and workers would be aided by providers and merchants.
Providence August 13 The Rhode Island Supreme Court rules Governor Brown had constitutional power to prorogue the Legislature last May at Newport, allowing the Republican state government to hold over. Charles T. McDonald 45 a retired Boston police officer died at his home 24 Dracut street yesterday. Appointed May 12 1873 he served as patrolman in Division 6 until his retirement April 17 1886. Funeral set for tomorrow at 2 PM at his residence.
Dennis J. Davis aged 21 of 9 Holt avenue Somerville was arrested yesterday by Division 12 officers for the larceny of a bicycle valued at 125 dollars. The bicycle was reported stolen in July from George Parkeyson of 8 Route CG.
A massive blaze in Minneapolis on August 14 consumed lumber yards and mills along Nicollet Island and the riverfront, destroying Clark's box factory and several wood structures. Wind shifts spread the flames, with two million dollars in losses and about 200 small buildings burned. Over a thousand people were made homeless as headlines describe heroic efforts and widespread damage.

George W. Bradley a 67 year old Pittsfield resident at 88 Daniels avenue disemboweled himself with a pocket knife. He had long suffered from bowel ulceration and died shortly after the effect of a wound that exposed his intestines. Doctors treated him but he succumbed around noon. Bradley left a wife and two grown children.
Thomas McCluskey, arrested in the West End on Saturday, nearly escaped from confinement at Station 8 by removing diamond saws from his boot and severing a jail bar before being recaptured by Malden police. He awaits burglary trial in Malden.
A hack driven by Charles H Blanchard carrying four men crossed Washington Street near Newton at 9 45 last night. Grove Halls Electric Car 1929 collided with the hack wrecking its running gear and causing injuries. John Turner 252 Friend Street suffered a severe scalp wound James J McBride 23 Crescent Place and John W Lynch 388 Nashua Street were bruised Blanchard 33 MccLean Street had a lacerated face and likely fractured right shoulder.
