Hearings on Charles River bridges draw scrutiny next month
Ex mayor O'Brien backs deferring Endicott order to raise draws on Charles River bridges. City official cost estimates reach about 2.5 to 4 million dollars for key spans with broader plans and potential damages to wharf investments. He argues sustaining navigation with current draws serves commerce and questions government interference.

Lucy Stone Blackwell Seventy-First Birthday at Dorchester Retreat
At Pope's Hill Dorchester Mrs Lucy Stone Blackwell editor of the Woman's Journal celebrated her seventy first birthday quietly. In a long interview she recalled early suffrage work and personal hardships, noting advances for women from Oberlin days to the present. Her brother William B Stone, in his late seventies, wrote from West Brookfield about the old homestead. She recalled opposition ranging from a minister in Malden to a crowd at Gardner in 1847 and recounted incidents of laughter and abuse she endured while campaigning for abolition and later for suffrage and temperance. Her brother Francis Stone lives in Dana and another sister resides near North Adams. Portraits of Parker Garrison Mitchell and others hang near her desk as she continues to push for women’s rights.

Bridges and navigation rights under city bridge control
A city ordinance restricting bridge draw openings was upheld as reasonable. The U S Supreme Court affirmed that navigable rivers allow temporary obstructions for necessary transit and that public welfare justifies state or city control over bridges. The document cites Judge Field on free navigation and recalls history of Charles River and Warren bridges, noting lack of public notice for federal intervention and potential remedies.
