Old Home Week Features Echo Across New Hampshire

Outdoor meetings marked Old Home Week with many churches closing for summer vacations. In Concord an open-air grove gathering on Penacook Lake featured representative ministers. Claremont held an opera house service. Pembroke staged a Methodist Church service with town history and music. Woodstock hosted services at the Woodstock South Church with two sermons and a basket dinner. East Andover had sermons on The Church and the Home and a history talk by Napoleon Bryant. Deerfield anticipated a reunion with ex-pastor Jacob Chapman but he could not attend. Merrimac’s J O Walker preached at First Baptist. Sandown observed Old Home Day with a sermon by W P Odell at the old church.

Diplomat Hugh Rosvenor's Suicide in Vienna

The Hon. Hugh Rosvenor, 81, second son of Lord Ebury and former attache to the Pekin legation, killed himself with a revolver in Vienna. He had loved an American missionary in Pekin who rejected him and believed the girl massacred. Louise Randall, the woman, later learned of his death in Paris.

Serious Lynn Assault at 92 Federal Street

At 2 o'clock this morning James and Hugh Riley allegedly kicked in a door on Federal Street and savagely assaulted Hugh Scollins. Riley struck him on the head with a bottle causing a scalp wound while James Riley cut him under the eye with a steel ring. Scollins was taken to a hospital, then returned home and is reported very weak this afternoon.

Tramps Arrested for Freight Car Burglary Near Conna Junction

Two men from Charlestown Massachusetts were arrested in South Berwick for breaking into a freight car on the Boston and Maine line at Conna Junction. A seven pound box of plug tobacco was found in their possession, linking them to the theft.

Mrs Sarah N Edmond Dies From Train Wreck Shock

Worcester Aug 12 Mrs Sarah N Edmond of Worcester died from nervous exhaustion due to the shock suffered in the June 29 wreck of the Baptist excursion train on the Fitchburg road near Worcester. She had been ill since the incident.

Explosion Blasts Kenosha Saloons Injuring Five

Henry B. Beck, a Kenosha saloon keeper, lit a match in his cellar to locate a gas leak. The blast wrecked two buildings and seriously injured Beck and four others.

Bryan Association Meeting in South Boston

The William Bryan Association met in Clan na Gael Hall and approved sending a copy of resolutions to William J Bryan. The club pledged loyal support during the campaign and admitted over forty new members. They voted to affiliate with the National Association of Democratic Clubs and to appoint a delegate for the national convention in Indianapolis.

Lawrence McGovin Dies After Freight Collision Near School Street

Beverly reports Lawrence McGovin a local morocco dresser was found beside railroad tracks near the overhead bridge on School Street. It is believed he was struck by a midnight freight train. He leaves a widow and seven children.

Murder in Halifax Drives Investigation of Family Feud

In Halifax on Queen Street John T Curran, 58, was killed after two blows. William Cox, 2, is held for investigation amid police statements that the murder sprang from a family feud. Cox was seen fleeing after Curran accused him of improper relations with Curran's daughter in law. Cox was later arrested while buying a ticket for Chicago where a brother in law resides.

Leverett Street Lodgers Dispute Ends in Penknife Assault

John Murphy assistant mail carrier in Malden rescued two girls and a boy when a raft broke apart on the Malden River near Charles street. He jumped in without pause, pulling the first girl from the water by the waist and the second by the hair as a boy escaped. He downplayed his heroism, calling it nothing more than anyone would do.
