William J. Hartnett says he will surrender to District Attorney John B. Moran and recounts bribery of jurors, city leaders’ conferences, pistol duels with opponents, a visit to Boston where he was wanted, and an enforced exile living on little money. If true, the public confession could trigger a major sensational case.
Hartnett says he bribed jurors in the Crocker will trial and demanded more money from his employer on Court street. After a pistol threat and a fist fight the next day they fought until separation. He later hired Moran as counsel amid a district attorney campaign and blackmail allegations.
Fred Cochrane was robbed on the Common as two men attacked him from behind and stole his watch and clothing bundle. Edward Shaughnessey and Henry Mageau, both arrested by Officers Rooney and Murphy after a pursuit led by bystanders, face charges for the street crime and assault.
Fred Sullivan of Turnbull avenue faces a Malden District Court appearance on a late night shooting of Andrew Mc Wadden of Vernon street near Sullivan’s home. Sullivan is out on 1600 dollars bail after a quarrel incident in Wakefield.
A long term inmate at the State prison in Charlestown, known as James H. Lee but believed connected to a Back Bay family, hanged himself from his cell door late Saturday night after tearing his bed blanket into a rope. He had served six months of a 15 to 20 year sentence for brutal abuse of a young boy. A confederate received a long term, and officials withheld his real name out of respect for the family. The prisoner refused to work, stayed in his cell, and showed moody withdrawal.
A. W. Mansur of Sharon missing since June 11 is found dead in a berry pasture on Malden Street, West Boylston. He was a banker with Mansur & Co. of Boston and served as Sharon school committee chairman. An Italian worker discovered the body. Investigators identify the man via papers and an envelope to Mrs. C. A. Withee. Miriam A. Withee confirms Mansur had visited in early June and left June 11 to return home.
New London Conn Aug 11 After drifting in calm and fog all Saturday night 32 of 40 New York Yacht Club yachts finished the Huntington start. Aurora won with 9 44 pm finish time 85 miles. Queen Katrina Winsome Gardenia took class prizes. Queen time 15 49 56 Winsome 14 53 25.
Havana Aug 11 The yellow fever outbreak in the American garrison at Cienfuegos proves graver than thought with eight new cases reported today, bringing the total to ten thus far.
In Pittsfield on August 11, Mrs. Charles Witham fired a buckshot loaded shotgun from a kitchen window, killing a 205 pound black bear that was eating berries in the garden. The bear may be the same one that hunted men on Friday night. The Whitney estate, a 16,000 acre game preserve, is on the market for about 100000 dollars and expected to sell soon.
Austin Curtis of Boston was arrested in Middletown for overspeeding. Constables used a secret course with stop watches to measure his speed. In court he admitted the offense and asked for punishment. Judge Franklin imposed the minimum fine of 22 dollars.
The Roxbury police on liquor law violations arrested Rose Simons 35 at 265 Blue Hill Avenue for keeping and exposing liquor for sale. Police also seized four gallons of beer and other liquors from Jennie Riland 27 Arnold Street after a premises search.
More than five thousand telegraphers, both men and women, are out, tying up nearly every major city west of the Alleghenies. Boston and New York unions decided to wait for a Chicago conference early this week with Labor Commissioner Neill, President Small, President Gompers, and Easley to mediate an adjustment between telegraph companies and workers.
President Small in California warned a nationwide telegraphers strike if the government does not promise to investigate strike conditions or pursue arbitration. He said a general walkout would halt key operations and cripple railroad traffic, affecting brokers, the Associated Press, and major telegraph companies. The crisis centers on a Chicago conference held earlier this week.
Boston telegraphers will remain at work until directed by national officers. They will be ready to strike in support of other cities if instructed by National Secretary Wesley Russell, a decision approved yesterday per international directives.

San Francisco Aug 11 The Commercial Telegraphers Union head S J Small says a general strike will be called if no conciliation is found by Tuesday He would resume work immediately if the government insists on an investigation or arbitration of the telegraphers grievances and if Labor Commissioner Charles P Neill supports it
In Brandon Vermont on August 11 C L McLean a 67 year old Civil War veteran and iron worker killed Fred Emery a laborer after Emery repeatedly visited McLean’s home while intoxicated and threatening to expose his wife and child. A crowd gathered as the confrontation ended with a single fatal shot to the heart.
A touring car owned by Henry C. Wheeler of Winthrop collided with an electric car in Cambridge. John Oswell, 24, of Winthrop Highlands, a professional chauffeur, was severely injured with a dislocated right ankle. Miss Gertrude Wheeler steered the car to prevent ejection, while other occupants were shaken. Oswell admitted to Cambridge Relief Hospital for several days’ confinement.
Lieutenant John Gavin of Ladder 8 Roxbury suffered head and hand injuries and a badly cut leg when a chemical extinguisher exploded while quenching a small blaze over an awning at 266 Blue Hill Avenue. Several firefighters nearby escaped injury from flying debris as the extinguisher burst. Gavin was taken to his Dorchester home.
At Harvard observatory astronomers observed a prolific meteor shower last night. Professor E. C. Pickering noted the conditions matched typical August skies aside from the sheer number of meteors.
Yesterday’s prostrations reported at multiple city spots. George Turnbull aged 45 collapsed at 695 Washington Street. Isaac Putauge 33 at Summer Street. Charles Myers 66 of 100 Albany Street picked up near Chauncy and Essex. John Maxwell 41 from Ossipee New Hampshire walked to Roxbury Station 10 and fainted. Agnes Donelan 40 suffered a fractured ankle at Berwick House Causeway Street. Annie Clifford 21 collapsed in Central Square Cambridge Hospital reports indicate serious conditions.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair weather Monday and Tuesday with little temperature change and fresh southwest winds. The national forecast notes New England mostly fair with possible showers in the north portion Monday and interior clearing Tuesday, with southwest to west winds.
