At Norfolk navy yard, six crewmen were burned when rivet driving splashed varnish and a rivet metal fragment caused a blast in Worden's paint locker. Wilson and White were thrown onto deck as fire began. Shurman helped rescue Wilson. Most injuries were serious but recoverable. Wilson may lose his left eye.
