Maine sweet corn outlook from Portuano

A leading Maine packer predicts this year’s sweet corn output will total about two thirds of last year’s bumper crop. Quality should be fine despite heat and drought, with 600 000 cases or 1 200 000 dozen expected to be packed in Maine, down from 750 000 cases previously. The Winslow Packing Company will operate as usual this fall and a new nail free box patent could save one cent per box, a significant sum for Maine packers using around a million boxes annually.
