Brastmakers elect delegates for a national convention in Philadelphia to oppose prison contract labor. Bankers’ convention programme announced. Hanlan wins Nantasket single scull. South Boston stakes winner Unknown by William Kelly. Stock market tight as money and Mexican buying lift markets. Boston bank statement favorable. Little Neck and Fort Smith earnings highlight. Aitchison New York & New England and Arquette Houghton & Ontonagon noted as key features.
The August 9 New York trial of Public Works Commissioner Squire continued before Mayor Grace with Chamberlain Ivins as first witness. Ivins testified about resignations, forged letters, Flynn and Thompson pressuring for Squire’s removal, and possible arrest within twenty four hours as grand jury proceedings proceed in secrecy.
In New Haven on August 9 the Wallingford shoe-box mystery shows little progress. Coroner Mix, Examiner McGaughey, and Constable Austin conducted an autopsy but identified nothing. The stomach will be sent for microscopic exam. shoe box cover washing may reveal the manufacturer.
The tenth New Hampshire Veterans' Association encampment will be held August 24 to 27 at camp H. S. Putnam in The Weirs New Hampshire. Veterans from all states are invited. A Veterans week flag display is urged and a press notice requested. The program includes receptions parades camp fires regimental reunions a Haynes oration and a dedication of new Second Regiment headquarters on Thursday.
Aug 9 report from CuicaGo details vast fires across Marathon and Clark counties Wisconsin. Spencer village destroyed with $400000 loss. 35 families homeless. Mills and lumber losses spread across multiple towns including Marshfield Neillsville Howettsville Dell's Dam and Colby. No deaths reported yet but fear of more casualties as gales and dry conditions continue.
In Chambersburg Pennsylvania a large frame elevator and warehouse owned by the Western Maryland railroad burned last night. The structure valued at 13000 with 7500 insured. Staner and Steteley occupants of the elevator and flouring mill faced total loss of 16500 with 8000 insured. Merchants losses in the warehouse around 3000. Early this morning Harry Wingert, a young helper, was found dead in the ruins. Two other men are still missing.
A fire at Sheldon & Co s Eggleston elevator in Red Wing Minnesota Saturday night caused debris to strike the railway and topple an up freight train. Nineteen cars of merchandise machinery and ties burned. Four of nine tramps in a boxcar were burned to death three seriously injured and two escaped unharmed.
The captain of the steamer Colina observed what appeared to be a steamer ashore in Forteau bay near Amour Point. It has a black funnel with a white stripe. No telegraphic communication with Forteau Point and no further particulars available at present.
Recent arrivals at Bar Harbor include Patrick J. Fora editor of the Irish World the Hon W W Thomas former minister to Norway the Hon Isaac Baley Memye and the Hon Joseph A Locke all noted among visitors at the seaside resort.

The tannery of Charles Harrington & Co. in Peabody was attacked by a mob this evening, breaking several windows with stones. No entry occurred as workers inside were armed with Winchester rifles.
In Peabody a large crowd followed Franklin Osborne and local officials as five non union workers were escorted to Osborne’s tannery by police. Knights of Labor denounced the disorder but did not prevent hooting crowds. Militia may be called if trouble continues. 30 Osborne workers return to work. In Haverhill nine officers respond to the riot scene.
In Chicago on August 9 a levy was filed against A P Elder and Elder Publishing to satisfy a $10,000 judgment in favor of James J West. West claimed Elder loaned sums, then failed to provide security or mortgaged unencumbered property that later proved heavily encumbered. Elder asserts the publication remains unaffected.
In Newport Rhode Island on August 9 the Westchester Polo Club cup opened with Meadow Brook and Long Island teams. Hitchcock led Meadow Brook to wins in several games, including two swift finishes, while Thorn and Mortimer contributed for Long Island. Final score Meadow Brook 5 Long Island 3 amid a large fashionable crowd.
The Manchester Base Ball Association announced the release of Ham left fielder and Carrigan right fielder after a game in Concord and a six week period of alleged indifferent play. Management cites failure to meet promised standards as the reason.
August Spies and Michael Schwab testified on the Haymarket case in Curiaco. Schwab denied involvement and denied guiding Spies, while Spies described his background, role with Arbeiter Zeitung, and events at the May 3 and May 4 gatherings including his statements and the presence of dynamite.
A C Rose, New York agent for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, says due to the Pennsylvania railroad's arbitrary actions the B and O will not receive through freight for now. He claims Pennsylvania has ordered removal of B&O cars from its tracks on most routes and describes treatment as disgraceful and charges as outrageous. Rose notes the move won’t affect trunk line pool relations and that other arrangements are expected.
Fish Warden Whittier of Old Orchard and Frank Phillips seized two Portland vessels the Dreadnaught and James M. Dyer for fishing inside three miles of the shore. A third schooner from Provincetown escaped. Each boat carried about fifty barrels. Fishermen plan a test case under the 1885 Maine law in chapter 261.
In Framingham Aug 9 a strike by Para Rubber Shoe Company operatives ended after a committee met the new superintendent. Gates opened this afternoon and many workers returned to finish last week’s unfinished benches. Full operation expected by Monday.
Bridgeton Me August 9 The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows convenes tomorrow for annual session. The Odd Fellows Mutual Relief Association held the evening meeting electing Byron Kimball as vice-president and reelecting the old board. Membership stands at 4700 with fifteen assessments and 61500 paid in death benefits. Reserve fund totals 21500.
A Bath woman, a firm Spiritualist, reports the spirit of a deceased painter and wallpaperer appeared to help when she struggled to finish papering a corner. After the vision vanished, the wallpaper was neatly affixed as if done by herself.
An informal meeting at Lake Pleasant yesterday reviewed a plan to buy the camp grounds. Five new committee members joined the group, triggering considerable discord and fears the proposal may be derailed.

Lonpoon August 9 The Chronicle's Rome correspondent reports the Pope had two fainting spells Saturday and remains exhausted yet continues his duties. Physicians express no fear of a fatal outcome and hope for a speedy recovery.
The Rev Randolph Campbell senior pastor of the Fourth Religious Society of Newburyport died in Rowley yesterday. Born December 31, 1809 in Woodbridge New Jersey he studied at Princeton. Licensed 1834 he preached at Shelter Island and led Newburyport from 1837. After forty years in the ministry he moved to Nebraska and later did missionary work in Lincoln. He returned to Newburyport for rest in June and leaves a widow and three children. He was a member of the Boston Presbytery and Essex North Conference.
General John Eldred of Newport died yesterday after a brief illness. He joined Masonry in 1845 and led all bodies from blue lodge through the Rhode Island consistory. Eldred presided over Washington Commandery, K.T., for fifteen years and belonged to the Grand Commandery of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He was a former grand warden and ranked among Rhode Island’s leading Masons after serving as mayor Doyle’s funeral. He was a brigadier general of the state militia and a legislator.

In St. Albans Vermont on August 9 eighteen delegates were chosen as straight Republican delegates to the county convention at Enosburg Falls on Wednesday. The balters who caused trouble two years ago elected twenty eight delegates while the straight Republicans tally fifty four.
The Brazilian frigate carrying Prince Leopoldo sailed from Newport Rhode Island after salutes with government stations. The ship heads directly to sea, marking a formal departure.
New York reports the meeting of Henry Irving, Miss Ellen Terry, and Miss Edith Wardell aboard the Fulda off quarantine. The Loanda escorted them, the party greeted by cheering passengers as Irving discussed travel to New London and Narragansett Pier. Terry celebrates a found pet dog, Fussy, and Irving denies theatre plans.
The will of Samuel J. Tilden was read at Greystone with executors John Bigelow Andrew H Green and George W Smith present. Bequests include 100000 to Mrs Welton and life incomes for others while Greystone Gramercy Park go to executors, who may fund free libraries in New York Yonkers and New Lebanon. The estate not exceed 8000000 and two thirds funds aimed at public good.

Claims of Governor Maceya ordering decapitation of a prisoner and American officials warned to leave Mexico circulate, as 800 Mexican troops move toward Paso del Norte and US Cavalry arrives at Fort Bliss. Consul Brigham clarifies no immediate demand issued, while Cutting is summoned to court in Paso del Norte with Brigham in attendance.
An ancient empire tale recounts a sultan who offered a golden ball to the greatest liar. After many improbably false tales are dismissed as possible, an old man arrives with a jar of gold coins and proves the sultan must settle a debt to win the prize.
The Cheyenne Wyoming Leader notes that a five cent bounty per prairie dog scalp has sharply reduced their numbers. Clerks report heavy sums in warrants for slayers, with pests threatening grass, grain, and cattle ranges. Burrows pose serious riding dangers, causing frequent accidents to cowboys. James C Matthews, the colored Democrat whose nominee for recorder of deeds was rejected by the Senate, was reappointed and will assume the office at 10 a.m. tomorrow. He congratulated Douglass on a era of political equality under the present administration. Douglass will be in his office at the stated hour. Matthews has received telegrams of support from prominent colored men, including a dispatch from Albany, New York noting 100 guns fired in his honor.
In a Chicago theatre Eugene Field burst into uncontrollable laughter at a line, turning heads as an Irish spectator glared, then clarified with a brogue. The scene ended with Field calmly returning to work, a deft display of playful mischief that the audience celebrated as high art.
John E. Whitman aged 27 was run over by a Fitchburg train near Stowe and died shortly after. He resided at Whitman’s. The eight hour system took effect yesterday in Chicago’s packing house district affecting more than 1000 workers as employers claim it demoralized the packing trade. A massive Illinois camp meeting drew over 60,090 attendees at Murdock grounds.
