Boston Longshoremen Seek Higher Wages Refused by Steamship Firms
The Boston agents of six coastwise steamship companies refused the longshoremen petition for wage hikes and better conditions. About 900 of Boston’s 8000 longshoremen work on coastwise steamers and are involved in the demand. The union asked for $12 to $14 weekly, 30 cents hour day work, 40 cents night work, 50 cents Sunday and holiday pay, daily holiday pay if not worked, and extra pay for work. Despite a recent wage increase for over 2000 deep water longshoremen, the action leaves the Boston group set on pursuing their petition.
