Labor Day Barge Race Sparks City Hall Budget Row
A city council wrangle over Labor Day plans led to reduced funding for hungry legislators and a scaled back feast. The New England Amateur Rowing Association would run a barge race after the regatta, with $200 set aside for incidental expenses. Council members argued funds were insufficient and tugs and refreshments would strain the budget. Several aldermen and councilmen voiced discontent as the barge race faced opposition from those fearing financial strain on the holiday program.
