Providence August 7 The Natropole Athletic Association stages a twelve mile bicycle road race tomorrow as the first event for a cup under the new club. Starters include W. M. Scott C. H. Weed James Foster Jr F. Bufton M C G Shippee J. E Hu P E Morgan and A Heilborm.
Nine inmates escaped from the State Asylum near Auburn New York with only one at large. Albert Downing stole a horse and drove off, later overtaken. Patrick McGuire fought asylum officer Clark in a shed, but Clark overpowered him. The remaining fugitives include Collins at large, a 21 year old, six foot, 140 pounds.
Brmerrort Conn Aug 7 H V Wim brow mate of the schooner Hester A Walters Norfolk Va allege assault on Henry Shepard a colored sailor last Tuesday as the vessel neared port. Shepard later died from injuries. Wim brow bound over to September term of the Superior Court. Witnesses George Adams and John Thomas Powell, both colored sailors, saw Wim brow strike Shepard with a belaying pin. Wim brow 20 a Salisbury Md man said Shepard pushed him after he attempted to correct halyards. He said he struck once. Shepard replied with a blow. Captain intervened. Wim brow said he faced more trouble from the crew than any other.
The President refused pardon in Ezra Haywood case editor of The Word Prineston Mass sentence two years for improper mail matter. He also denied pardon for Charles Ammerman ex San Francisco Post Office clerk, but cut fine from 500 to 100 dollars. National Amateur Rowing Regatta reports add entries for Aug 18 with teams from Sunnyside and Amateur Rowing Club of Toronto.
