District attorneys nationwide ordered to launch immediate anti-trust style prosecutions against food profiteers and hoarders. Authorities will seize hoarded foodstuffs to curb the high cost of living and ensure supply.
Attorney General Palmer announced antitrust suits against meat packing firms Armour Swift Morris Wilson and Cudahy as part of a drive to reduce the high cost of living. He said the evidence shows clear anti trust violations and prosecutors will decide civil or criminal action under existing law. The government hopes for jail sentences in this campaign, unlike past prosecutions.
Secretary of State Lansing told the Senate committee that President Wilsons Fourteen Points were substantially carried out in the peace treaty. He noted points not explicit in the German treaty would appear in treaties with Austria Turkey and Bulgaria. He also opposed Shantung and the Kaiser trial and said the American draft never presented.

The New England railroad shopmen strike expanded as 3000 Billerica workers quit at 3 30 PM. By morning 15 000 Federated Crafts members in the New Haven system joined the walkout, with possible union action by Boston & Maine shops looming.
President Wilson issued a formal statement saying Viscount Ishii’s frank note on Japan policy toward Shantung should remove misunderstandings. The note addresses rights and privileges including setting up a settlement at Tsingtao and broader Chinese status.

Lieutenant H. Wallace and three sailors escaped serious injury when a heavy navy auto truck rolled off Commonwealth pier into 30 feet of water. Wallace suffered a deep lip gash and head bruises. two sailors escaped unhurt besides aiding the officer. A third sailor aboard the truck also survived. A small boat carried them to safety.
A. L. Erlanger C. B. Dillingham and Florenz Ziegfeld Jr announce a joint control of theatres in major cities. A $6,000,000 chain will be built in New York Philadelphia Chicago and other cities under their direction. They signed a ten year lease of Boston's Colonial Theatre as part of the merger to run musical and dramatic productions year round.
In South Billerica near a cottage, Boston police arrested Morris Cohen and his wife after a four hour ambush. They were identified as ringleaders of a bold band stealing auto parts including tires and other appliances, with about $5000 value recovered and seven others already in custody.
Ten people were apprehended since Tuesday with three women including Mrs. Bessie Cohen and Mrs. Pearl Lewis among them. The band operated within 30 miles of Boston for a month, targeting garages and railroad stations while using a desolate South Billerica cottage as a base. Men named include Thomas Jackson Edward J. Scanlon Orio Rafael Leo Gallagher.
In Washington Aug 6 organized labor urged a Plumb plan to place railroads under public operation but faced House Interstate Commerce Committee scrutiny. Warren S Stone and Frank Morrison warned conditions might justify drastic actions but lawmakers deemed the plan too radical to curb high living costs.
London Aug 6 Viscount Grey was unofficially added to the list of candidates for the British ambassador to the United States. Despite his failing eyesight American circles linked the report with Andrew Bonar Law's hint that a high political figure would be offered the post.
