Berlin Aug. 5 Light sentences were imposed on the German Ordnance Corps after court martial for be traying secrets accepting bribes and insubordination. Lieutenants Tilian Schleuder Hinst Hoge and Chief Clerk Pfeiffer and NCOs Schmidt Droese were punished. Hoge remains in the army. The men disclosed government contract information to Krupp representatives.

After a long illness Vernon SH Brown, longtime New York manager of the Cunard Steamship Company, dies. He had shipping interests in New York and Boston and was one of the country’s best known shipmen since coming of age.

Shawmut Ave Car Route Shifted During Track Construction

Beginning this morning until track work finishes on Shawmut Avenue between Dover Street and Pleasant Street subway, outbound cars divert via Tremont and Dover streets while inbound stay on normal route. Upon outward track completion, inbound traffic uses Dover and Tremont to the subway and outward cars return to the regular route.

Bates Defies Probe Committee Over Meeting

Chairman Charles H. Bates of the Revere board of assessors refused to appear before the special town committee of investigation during the meeting at Revere Town Hall last evening. The defiance was foreshadowed in a Post interview published days earlier.

In a letter Bates rejects the panel’s invitation stating he does not recognize the committee’s authority. The special panel, formed two weeks earlier at a town meeting, is to investigate the assessors’ office and seek action with the attorney general or district attorney. The district attorney is expected to respond to the committee soon.

Girl Locked in Closet for Two Days Rescued in Chicago

Five year old Annie Newman was found alive after nearly 72 hours locked inside a freshly varnished closet in a vacant East Chicago house while playing hide and seek with friends. A real estate agent discovered her as the door stuck and she had been unable to escape. Authorities fear she may have died from starvation and dehydration.

Shot in Row Over Money Ends in Fatal Wounding

Daniel Shekos, 25, of Melrose Street, shot Michel Costos, 22, at a Greek boarding house over money matters. Costos was critically wounded, detained suspect by police, and an interpreter aided the interrogation. Costos remained on the dangerous list at City Hospital.

Boston and Beverly police are asked to locate 16 year old Ella L Brown of Beverly who disappeared Sunday morning. She is described as 56 feet 312 inches tall with dark eyes and a medium complexion, wearing a white dress and blue hat with a white rim when she left home.

Giant Towboat Charles P. Greenough Launches for Boston

The towboat Charles P. Greenough, built for Boston at a cost of 95 000 dollars, was launched today in Rockland Maine. The 144 foot long vessel has a 26 12 foot beam, 16 foot depth and 400 gross tons, noted as the second largest wooden towboat on the Atlantic coast.

Chauffeur at Hanan's Discharged at Narragansett Pier
