Halls Rubber Store reports a massive Saturday through Monday rush as 1004 Macintosh Coats, woollen with cemented seams, are offered for 6.00 each. The firm asserts odorless, climate stable goods and warns against English or foreign imitations.
A baron connected to the French and German legations reports he was robbed of 3700 dollars at a Long Branch club house this morning. He provided details to local authorities and is seeking restitution.
Montreal and Ottawa echo belief that Washington’s Behring Sea seizures are a bluff. Politicians from J. Curran to Sir Sumer Vine urge amicable settlement while opposing handing over the Black Diamond. First Lieutenant Peter Leary Jr visits the Vermont National Guard encampment at West Randolph VI. Also granted leaves of absence: Colonel A K Smith seven days Major A A Woodhull two months Captain Paul Rasmer ten more days Captain J B Johnson three months.
In St Johnsbury Vermont on August 6 the Chamberlin Post Grand Army of the Republic the largest in the state unanimously indorsed Commissioner Lanner and pledged hearty support for his interpretation of pension laws as just and liberal.

Spokane Falls Wash Aug 5 nearly the entire business district was burned last night twenty five blocks reduced to ashes estimated loss 14 million fire started at a lodging house lack of water crippled the department flames spread rapidly destroying the Hyde block Pacific Hotel and Grand Hotel among others a man named Charles Davis roasted alive and died at noon a relief committee organized provisions to be supplied free militia patrolled the burned area and five of seven banks in Crescent block resumed business the city water works chief blamed for neglect while San Francisco reports raise total loss and insurance figures Spokane population around 20 000 with strong regional commerce and extensive new construction before the blaze.
The old paper mill at Mill River, owned by the National Mechanic Bank and leased to A F Hind of New York, burned Sunday morning. Blotting paper production had started May 1. Loss estimated at 18000 with no local insurance. A separate fire damaged Mr Kennedy’s barn and Mr Miller’s house in Great Barrington, with horses saved and probable total loss about 8000, partly insured. Crxcrmatt Ohio reports a fire at Lackman’s brewery causing about 40000 loss.
The cruiser Boston, after a bottom break in Newport Harbor, has been temporarily repaired and sailed for New York at 8 this morning. Captain Howell declares she is fit for a 3000 mile cruise despite serious seeming damage. Captain O Kane reports the injury not severe and a diver will assess. The Boston arrived at the Brooklyn navy yard later, brushing the Vermont during docking with minor friction.
Aug 5 judge Horton ordered all Cronin murder related prisoners, including P O Sullivan, transferred from branch 1 to branch 2 to ensure joint trials. Indictments not quashed against Beggs, Coughlin, Woodruff and Kunze. Trials set for Aug 26 before Judge McConnell. Martin Burke faces transfer and intense crowd passions during journey.
Forecast issued for Maine New Hampshire Vermont and rest of New England. Showers coastal areas with fair conditions inland. Temperatures slightly warmer in eastern Massachusetts and far eastern New York. Winds northerly to westerly and generally mild across the region through Tuesday evening.
Postmaster General Wanamaker issues a sharp letter to Norvin Green of Western Union arguing the government granted telegraph firms vast benefits under the 1866 act and its amendments. He says post roads and city streets have been used as rights of way and urges a lower government rate, noting press and rail rates rival or exceed it. The missive questions legality and urges policy adjustments to speed up government communications.
