The Norlands, Washburn home, a 250 acre estate at South Livermore near Lewiston, features a granite Gothic library built by Washburn descendants in memory of Israel Washburn and wife. The 32 by 48 foot building houses 2000 volumes and frescoed interior walls. Dedicatory ceremonies on the lawn drew ex Vice President Hamlin and many notable figures.
London August 6 Cyrus W Field hosted a banquet marking the 27th anniversary of the first Atlantic cable. Toasters included The Queen and The President of the United States with other dignitaries. Messages of congratulations were sent to New York and the Associated Press chief.
Gov. Pierce sent $100 to Warner W. Bateman of Cincinnati in full satisfaction of a Paducah 1864 judgment for the value of a mulatto boy and girl withheld by Pierce while quartermaster there. Costs total over $6000. The case had been defended by the government attorney, but the judgment remained active until Pierce paid to end further collection efforts.
A field review after Monday's tornado shows seven deaths, two additional in Camden and one in Philadelphia, with over 100 injured. Early fatalities have stabilised with no expected new deaths. Property damage is unestimated, Camden sustained the largest losses, others like Richmond face about 100000 dollars in damage.
In Rockland Massachusetts Aug 5 a crowd pursued R J Lane Pratt shoe workers transport J L Stoddard injuring him with stones as police and officers ride nearby. Report says Governor Robinson may be asked to aid as local protection proves inadequate.
New York August 5 The Mikado case involving Sidney Rosenfeld Edward J Abrahams and Musical Director Perkins charged with contempt of court for producing the play after a Wheeler injunction was argued in court today Further hearings are scheduled for Friday Rosenfeld and Abrahams shifted blame onto each other regarding responsibility for the production
At Van Amburgs circus in Belmont a leading athlete attempted a double somersault over elephants horses and camels. The wet springboard caused a slip and he was thrown into the air and fell breaking his spine. He is internally injured and cannot live. He hails from Manchester New Hampshire.
A southbound Air Line train des derailed six miles south of Spartansburg when a rail turned over. Conductor J J Rausone died and seven passengers were badly injured, with some expected to die.

Portland report states that the Atlantic Telegraph company has closed a major contract with the Mackay Bennet system, securing connections to London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Manchester, Paris, Havre, Berlin and all of Great Britain and Europe plus links to India, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Thomas Carpenter, secretary of the Virginia Base Ball association and bookkeeper for broker J. L. Schoolcraft, vanished with $38,000 in Virginia state bonds from the office safe. Supposedly fled to Canada. Some bonds resurfaced in Baltimore after being sold.
In Cherryfield Maine on August 5 the sum pledged to Col Henry Greene and the vote in support of the Shore Line railroad from Hancock to Calais and Eastport stands at 79000 dollars with about 10 miles of right of way secured. Final success appears likely though Calais and Eastport towns have yet to vote.
Austin Tex Aug 5 The Kansas cattle men who lease lands in Indiana territory complain to President Cleveland Texas is at full stock yet there remains 30 000 000 acres of school and university lands in Texas eligible for sale and lease This contrast underlines the tensions between western cattle interests and Texas land policy.
Timothy Ailman the artilleryman wounded by a premature cannon explosion near the transfer site of General Grant's remains at Saratova yesterday died this morning.
Gown, Topeka Kansas August 5. D Vv Mofit treasurer of Coffee county is missing. He appears to be connected to taxes collected totaling $16,000.
Albany dispatch describes crowds viewing Gen Grant’s remains as the funeral cortege moves toward New York. Officials, soldiers, and Grand Army posts line the route, with Hancock and staff leading the honor guard and a memorial slab later planned for the capitol. The train bears the body to New York amid bells, cannon, and steady crowds. viewing totals reach about 60,000 in Albany and later 77,200.
A funeral train bearing Gen. Grant moved from Hudson to West Point toward New York on August 5. Crowds lined rails and crossings, coins were laid on the tracks, and guns fired salutes as officials and onlookers followed the solemn procession from Poughkeepsie to the river city, with stops at Catskill Fishkill Hyde Park West Point and Garrisons.
A catafalque and canopy from Mt McGregor were set up in the New York City Hall corridor behind the rear iron gate. Rubber carpet covers the marble floor to ease the passage of mourners around the bier. Dark drapery hides staircase steps leading to the governor’s room, and a bronze Grant bust on a pedestal beneath an American flag draped with crepe stands nearby. Crowds flocked to the gates to view the solemn interior and the bier’s location.
Crowds sheltered from rain at Grand Central as the funeral train arrived and a solemn procession formed. Gen Hancock led the march up Fifth Avenue with veterans, marines, and guardsmen, passing draped houses, half-masted flags, and silent streets to City Hall amid dirges and military pageantry.

Albany Aug 5 The New York Legislature in joint assembly adopted mourning resolutions for Ulysses S Grant. They praised his service in war and peace, urged national unity, and pledged to send a delegation to his funeral. A committee was named to accompany Grant’s remains to New York City.
Capt. Young met with the mayor’s clerk about Liederkranz Beethoven Mannerchor and United German singing societies seeking to sing at city hall or the tomb. A telegram proposed scheduled times for each group to perform around the lying in state period, but Gen. Hancock doubts the true intent and may not provide space inside city hall.
From the USS Tennessee Rear Admiral Jeuett issued a general order placing naval vessels and forces under temporary command to prepare for the reception of the remains. A naval detachment of two marine and two blue jacket companies will travel by navy yard tugs to Forty-seventh Street, North River, then march to Grand Central depot aboard the Vermont's bind with an ambulance in attendance.

In Brockton Massachusetts Patrick Connerty a widower about 55 years old was arrested this afternoon on a charge of attempted rape of a four year old French girl the daughter of Theophilus Balcom of Campello He was somewhat under the influence of liquor and will appear in court in the morning.
Cincinnati dispatch reports a western inquiry into a 1855 appointment scandal. A petition signed by prominent men alleged the appointee was morally and professionally unfit. President tied to the now exposed names, while Grover Cleveland denounces the betrayal as treasonous and demands accountability.
Washington reports detail Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut harbor projects. A 25 foot by 300 foot channel is planned from Foxpoint Providence to Narragansett Bay with estimated costs 2350000. Pawtucket and Nantucket schemes cited with dredging jetty work and harbor of refuge. Civil service probe clears Postmaster Jones Indianapolis finding no violations and notes adherence to rules.

Train No 77 from Boston to Marblehead derailed a baggage car after striking a patent switch guard near the first drawbridge. The car rested against the draw’s guys, blocking both tracks. Marblehead train was moved back to depot and after clearance resumed in 25 minutes. Both tracks cleared in one hour with little damage.
