Sardine Crop Is a Failure in Maine Canneries

Blastport Maine August 4 The neglect of herring schools to visit the Maine coast this year has caused a shortage in the canning supply. Packers opened the season with only about a quarter of the usual stock and prospects have not improved since April 15. Eastern waters had some fish at season start, but schools diminished rapidly leaving few wandering schools for fishermen. Canners expect to end with far less than the normal 2,000,000 cases in stock even with 400,000 cases carried over.
