Postal Officials Deny Theft of Uncle Sam Mail Bags

Ottawa officials reject theft claims saying mail bags were merely borrowed for an indefinite period. The Journal fears Gov. Plaisted’s potential public disgrace and predicts editorials in the New York Star may signal Mr. John Kelly’s return as a high kicker. Maine editor Dingley mixes campaigning with witty pieces on army worm and bee culture as two weeks remain until the Manufacturers' Institute fair opens doors.

Tupper Defends Conservative Growth Gains in Canada 1868 to 1880

A St John meeting featured Mr Tupper asserting that Canada’s imports rose from 57 million to 80 million dollars and exports from 47 million to 87 million between 1868 and 1880. He cited bank capital, deposits, railway earnings, post office revenue, and postal traffic as major gains attributed to the Conservative party. A Vermont Maine Prohibition note follows, doubting a correspondent’s claim of 30 drunkenness arrests in a Maine city under 11,000 people. The piece questions which city is meant and urges clarification.

About 150 African American workers from Maryland and the District of Columbia are employed on the West Shore railroad along the Hudson as an experiment by contractor James Gray. More arrivals are expected, with the group living simply, earning roughly 150 per day, and engaging in singing and church activity after hours. The piece notes relative calm among the workers and compares them favorably to Italians previously employed on railway grading.

Premiums for first bale of cotton questioned

An old cotton man argues against premiums for the first bale claiming they invite fraud. He recalls schemes where buyers merged neighbor’s cotton to claim rewards and suggests premiums for the best bale of the season and for the best bale from each county. This would encourage careful picking and attract superior cotton to the market.
