A Chicago despatch from Socorro New Mexico reports fierce Indian raids killing settlers and Mexicans. Thirteen Mexicans died in Paraje after an engagement with the assailants, two captives were burned alive, and miners at Pueblo Springs are said to be surrounded. The raids are blamed on Victoria's old band now under Nina, prompting fears of a wider Indian war.
Robert Hottinger 15 died from morphine taken by his own hand after his parents opposed his romance with Katie 15. He bought twenty grains from his father's drug store and gave a dose to the girl, claiming it was medicine. Hottinger was found dead at No 16 Sedgwick Street. Katie survived.

Steamer Royal was burned to the water's edge after discharging passengers in Fredericton. Freight for Wood stock largely destroyed, crew escaped in a nude state. Vessel drifted up river then burned to ash before being pulled ashore. Nearby fires report in Michigan Vermont and Ohio with various property losses.
The New York and Brighton Beach railroad title and interest were sold by Sheriff Riley on court executions for 9 876 66 to T B Eldredge and 1 823 92 to Catherine Finnegan. Mr Eldredge bought the property for 8 500 subject to a 25 000 mortgage. He is a lawyer and his claim was for legal services.
The United States ship Lancaster at Portsmouth Navy Yard has been coppered and rammed, with all fittings fixed. Work since July 1 has been active and the vessel will be ready to sail and placed on commission as predicted by navy yard officers, serving as Admiral Nicholson's flagship in the Mediterranean.
Mayor King appointed four Black men to the Philadelphia police force, marking the first time Black officers will wear the uniform in the city. Rear Admiral Fairfax plans retirement from naval service in August after forty four years since joining in 1857 at age fourteen.
Five hundred driver boys and state pickers employed by the Susquehanna Coal company at Nanticoke are on strike, leaving all colliers idle. They work a three-quarter day schedule and demand full-time work with a wage increase of per a day. The company refuses the demand.

The assessors report total city valuation of 22 557 000 dollars, an increase of 2 088 900 from last year, with taxation set at 1 500 per 1 000 and ward by ward estimates for 1880 and 1881. Also noted are details on real estate and personal property totals by ward and overall.
In the British House of Commons Sir William Harcourt read Lowell's dispatch recounting Blaine's July 29 reply about a Liverpool plot. He said national state and municipal authorities are actively seeking authors, with few involved and determined pursuit.
In Pare Aug 5 President Grevy received new American minister Loyi P Morton and retiring minister Gen Noyes. William Morrill was jailed in Manchester for horse theft with multiple charges totaling $1,500 and tied to prior prison release last May.
Hartford man Brooks aged about 35 killed himself with opium. He leaves a widow and one child. Pittsfield resident Michael Tearney, held for eight months in Andersonville, just received 1140 dollars in pension arrears.
Mary Clapp of Holyoke died from burns sustained Wednesday afternoon. An inquest in the Moynihan Cadwell murder case was held in Springfield Friday before Judge Cogeland, with Monihan examined. Curtis Leonard, a machine shop worker at Moore and Wyman, was pulled into a belt at the No. 37 Foundry street shop and thrown eight feet, suffering a fractured skull and hospitalized. William Kirby, 65, fell at No. 48 Curve street, hitting the back of his head, causing brain concussion and confinement at City hospital.
Patrolman Rock of the 9th division found a female child's body about 2:30 pm Friday at the rear house of No 65 Hanveman Street. The body was placed in a box and taken to City hospital morgue. Dr Stedman was notified in Medical examiner Draper's absence.
