A soldier’s pay is thirty dollars monthly and includes clothing subsistence medical care and housing. Many soldiers can allot twenty five dollars to dependent support. Local boards should use this to assess discharge claims for dependency and determine if the soldier will be in a better or similar position after service. if not, discharge should be denied per General Crowder.

Reports from city examining boards show a strong push for exemptions as they screen men for the national army. In Division 10 Boston 6 of 26 passed said they were ready to serve, while Division 14 Roxbury saw 20 of 30 exempt. Cambridge Division 2 noted about six of seven passed seeking release.
Rejections for physical unfitness in Boston districts began work runs, with rates between 25 and 331 3 percent. Nine rejections were recorded in Division 10 South Boston from 3 examined, while Division 14 Roxbury disqualified 32 men out of 2 examined for bodily defects.

The Ninth Officers are Captain George J Cronin of D Company South Boston Lieutenant Francis J O Kane adjutant of the First Battalion and Lieutenant Michael J Lyons of H Company East Boston.

Peter Hedden a 33 year old Rochester Maine lumberjack came to Boston to see the sights and created a scare at the Chianti Cafe 198 Hanover street last evening about 830 o clock when he shot to pieces a large chandelier and threatened the waiters unless he received the change for a five dollar bill.
Hedden demanded change for a 11 bill then drew a .52 caliber revolver and fired at a chandelier. The blast caused panic as two women fainted and customers fled. He was restrained by patrolmen and to be arraigned on assault with a loaded weapon.
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt aged five and his brother George were seriously injured when a tree branch fell on their carriage near Sagamore Lake Adirondacks. The boys father’s employee John Hoy was killed and two nurses were injured. Mrs Vanderbilt had recently closed Ventfort Hall and traveled to Sagamore Lake to escape heat.
