French forces delivered strong blows on both Verdun and the Somme fronts within 24 hours, according to Allied dispatches. Berlin concedes losses in both sectors as Russians engage in fierce actions in the Stokhod region.
French forces drive a major thrust northeast of Verdun recapturing Fleury and the Thiaumont-Fleury defenses from Thiaumont to Froid Terre. After night and morning attacks along a four mile front the French advance about a quarter mile along the line and report over 650 prisoners taken.
Cincinnati beat Boston 3 1 in the first game and lost 5 3 in the second. Philadelphia defeated St Louis 76 to 4, New York beat Chicago 1 0, Brooklyn won 7 2 over Pittsburg. St Louis edged Boston 3 2 in ten innings, Detroit beat New York 2 to , Cleveland topped Philadelphia 3 1. New Haven won 4 1 over Springfield, New London beat Lawrence 9 3, Portland down Hartford 3 1, Bridgeport 7 5 Lynn, Worcester 11 5 Lowell.

In Indianapolis on August 3 the Progressive Party censured the national committee for endorsing Hughes at Chicago on June 26. Party leaders said voters will decide next November by conscience. An executive committee of 15 was appointed to perpetuate the party.
After a heated debate the party could not reassemble its national convention. It will field an electoral ticket in every state with a surviving nucleus, nominating John M Parker of Louisiana for vice president to potentially balance a close national race.
Captain Patrick Flaherty of the Woburn Fire Department sprained his leg and suffered burns as a rear wall collapsed during a blaze at the Rathbun Patent Leather factory at 230 Salem Street. Three hosemen were slightly injured. all were rescued and returned to duty. Fire loss is estimated at 25,000 dollars.
Johnny Evers failed to attend a late hour conference with Manager Stallings at Copley Plaza. He told reporters before leaving for Brighton that he would accept unconditional release if Stallings grants it.
Captain John Evers of the Boston Braves clashed with Red Smith of Cincinnati after a double header. Umpire Byron ejected Evers in the game, but after it ended the pilot again attacked and was battered by Smith, with spectators separating the fight.
An on field dispute between players escalated with harsh language spilling into the fourth inning. Umpire Byron intervened at the Boston dugout and ordered Evers from the game. As Evers left, Smith challenged him to a confrontation in the dressing rooms after the game.
Portland Maine August 3 John J Jumper and Chiever N Clark charged with arson in Rosemont Villa Peak's Island January 1 were held for the grand jury after a Municipal Court hearing. They pleaded not guilty.
Portsmouth police with a warrant removed 85 year old Sarah J. Farmer from Dr. Edward Cowles's sanitarium. Chief Michael Hurley Patrolman Condon Urbain Ledoux and Judge Ernest Guptill accompanied the attorney for Mrs. Farmer as she was placed into a awaiting car. Cowles allegedly tried to stop the exit but was overpowered.

Deser Morrill aged 63 known as the hermit of Songo Lock killed himself by leaping from the foot bridge railing into the Crocker River rapid at the river entry to Sebago Lake. He had lived in South Casco for ten years after moving from Boston and faced ill health and financial strain.
More than half of the 700 carmen in the Chelsea division voted to strike over a grievance tied to the discharge of C. W. Metcalf, conductor and union member. The vote totaled at Eagle Hall, Chelsea, with a midnight session planned for the remaining crew.
