Twenty destroyers and five submarines left Narragansett Bay to join a coast defence exercise along Long Island Sound starting tomorrow. Eleven battleships also had steam up for an early departure.
Wear Department officials say the exercise is not a trial of strength but a practice aid. The Atlantic fleet will support army plans and mine laying searchlight drills will occur as destroyers test lanes for battleships. The coast defense will practice under war conditions the next week.
