Madrid reports Spain has accepted the principal conditions of McKinley’s peace proposal and will seek formal approval after Washington inquiries. A peace delegation will confer with U S representatives, with Spain proposing minor amendments before ratification and immediate end to the fighting if settled.
Congressman John F. Fitzgerald of Boston is authorized to travel to Santiago, Cuba, with an undertaker and sealed casket to recover the body of Major Patrick J Grady of the Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers. He will also confer with quarantine and quartermaster officials on reimportation and transport plans. Fitzgerald plans to depart Washington tonight and reach Boston Thursday morning.
Corbett deposits 2500 with a Buffalo news office aiming to force a title bout. He states if he defeats McCoy at Buffalo he expects Fitzsimmons to accept a match. if not, the money goes to Jeffries, and if he defeats Jeffries he doubts Fitzsimmons can decline a meeting.

Grace M Vincent, age unspecified, drank carbolic acid at 10 Andrews Place last evening in an apparent self harm attempt. Neighbors heard her screams and alerted others. she was taken to City Hospital, where she is expected to recover. Her husband had left her and the couple had long been apart amid financial hardship and personal distress.
John McCann 40 confessed to burning a Dedham barn owned by Curtiss Chamberlain on June 15 and was taken into Dedham police custody. Fire Marshal Whitcomb and Aid. W W Adams traced a suspicious wagon rider to the scene and McCann admitted the arson was to collect a debt, threatening to burn the house if not paid. He faces a Dedham court hearing today.
Patrick Davis, a farm hand for W. E. Smith of Dracut, is under arrest on charges of assaulting Mrs. Smith and Patrick Eagan. Davis allegedly struck the woman, then attacked Eagan with hoes, set a dog on him, and Eagan, hospitalized, may not recover. Davis was intoxicated at the time.
Aug 2 Northampton. William H. Dickinson of Hatfield, a surety on Lewis Warner’s $10,000 bond to the Hampshire Savings Bank, says the bondsmen will fight rather than settle with the receiver. The challenge may hinge on the bond’s three year period and coverage of Warner’s alleged wrongdoing. Bondsmen named include ex-Mayor Henry A. Kimball and John M. Turner of Northampton, William H. Dickinson of Hatfield, and Edwin C. Barr of Springfield.
James Strickland, veteran Brooklyn shipbuilder who supervised the construction of the yacht America for the 1851 international contest, died at his Brooklyn home aged 84. Born in upstate New York, he moved to Green Point over sixty years ago to work as a ship joiner and rose to foreman at Henry Steers yard where the America and the Sappho were built.
Washington August 2. Secretary Alger reports the President has unofficially learned that the Spanish ministry has accepted the American terms just before midnight.
