Bravo Captains Blockade Run From San Juan to Provincetown

The British schooner Bravo under Captain Mmeno reports escaping the San Juan blockade on July 6 and delivering flour and fish at high prices. Liquor Dealer Shot by Officer in Blackstone

In Blackstone on August 1, Matthew H. Burns of Andrews Burns & Son was shot by Officer Dennis Corcoran through a saloon window. Burns was not fatally wounded, receiving two bullets one aimed at the back and the other lodging in the thigh. Corcoran claims self defense after prior tensions over warrants for illegal Sunday sales. Burns reportedly declared he was shot and was taken home after treatment.

Worcester woman sets New York to Boston bicycle record

Mrs A M Alley of Worcester completed the New York to Boston ride in 23 hours 39 minutes 14 seconds finishing at City Hall near midnight to a cheering crowd of about 500. Pacemakers from Worcester aided her pace and riders including J M Watson George Epworth FE Parker R A Wade James Linton and Hugh L Waite helped bring her down.

Mrs. Allen rides from New York to Boston in 23 hours 49 minutes elapsed time and 22 hours of riding to claim the first American woman city to city record. American forces occupy Juan Diaz near Ponce as Columbia grounds

In Porto Rico on July 31 Colonel Hulings with ten companies of the Sixteenth Pennsylvania occupied Juan Diaz eight miles northeast of Ponce on the road to San Juan. The American flag was raised amid enthusiastic crowds. The protected cruiser Columbia went aground entering Ponce harbor but is hoped to be floated tomorrow. General Brooke arrived and seven companies of the Nineteenth regular infantry reached on the Cherokee in the afternoon.
