Ben Horsford of Westfield attempted a horrible tragedy in Gloucester as his wife, visiting Mrs. William Whitman, faced multiple gunshots on Portuguese Hill after a dispute about fidelity. He claimed she would live with no one if not with him, but she survived briefly and was hospitalized. Horsford was soon found.
