British and French forces fend off attacks on three sides around Ypres as a major offensive unfolds. British line holds at all points while terrain changes favor or threaten gains, and the fate of Ypres remains in the balance amid heavy fighting and counterattacks.
The French government decorates 122 Massachusetts troops, led by the 104th Regiment, with the Cross of War for bravery in the Apremont battle. Among the honored are two chaplains. the award spans all ranks from captain to private, with a French general presenting in field headquarters.
