Great Western Telegraph From New York Hook Departure

The Great Western with Capt Matthews was telegraphed from New York about ten this forenoon while about twenty miles outside the Hook. London papers to March 9 and Liverpool to 10 inclusive have arrived. Oregon Question reports Mr Calhoun's pacific speech. Parliament adjourned for Easter. Peel announces Irish coercion bill resumes March 17 and corn importation bill follows.

Conviction for Gouging Eye in 1844 Crime

Reuben Cheek was convicted in the criminal court of gouging out the eye of Wi Maxey in August 1844 and sentenced to three years in the penitentiary. The note adds that foreign travelers have not recorded such punishment and imply it is not encouraged by law.
