Watertown mourns inventor George Taintor, aged 70, who died at Massachusetts General Hospital after a recent operation. A lifelong Watertown resident, he worked twenty years as a fancy pattern maker for Walker & ratt Manufacturing and created notable devices including the Taintor damper and an automatic hand tool. His son Charles Taintor of Washington, D. C. is the famed graphophone inventor. His latest creation was a wooden paper file.
A five story brick chimney crashed through a glass skylight at Fuchs & Lang, 29 Warren Street, injuring five employees. Emil Jaecke and Kurt Ruhbland suffered fatal skull fractures. Peter Beater, a workman, was arrested. the contractor Charles Wolfe may face heavy damages.

London April 28 Sir Harry Verney aged 91, a distinguished diplomat, soldier, and politician, is in critical condition from lung congestion. He pleads with doctors to prolong life until his son, Captain E. H. Verney, who was expelled from Parliament and sentenced to imprisonment for immoral practices, can be embraced one last time before the sentence expires next week. The elder Verney’s distress and fear of never seeing his son again worsen his illness, and doctors fear his wish may not be granted.

T Jefferson Coolidge is named American Minister to France in a surprise Senate nomination. The Boston born, Harvard educated executive built mills, led railroads, and funded libraries while holding posts across manufacturing and shipping. He previously led Boott Manufacturing and Atchison Topeka Santa Fe and chairs several companies. He also served Massachusetts at the Pan American Congress opposing free coinage of silver.

Lawrence April 28 Chief of Police Smith arrested a man at North Andover for burglary and arson at Ward Hill. Officer Harris arrested another man but he escaped. He and a third man were later arrested at Andover.
