Calf Pasture Gas Works Built Without Permit
A Boston hearing reveals the Bay State Gas Company built the Calf Pasture plant in 1885 without a building permit. Witnesses estimate total costs around 5780,000 and note the design did not meet specifications, with 8 purifying tanks but only 5 installed, no coal sheds, and disputed claims of being the largest plant in the country. The testimony targets possible private interests and city contracts with Brookline Gas. The committee plans further inspection of the Calf Pasture site and related documents.
