The Springfield Union hints Gov. Butler may be positioned for a diplomatic post, proposing he could be sent by President Arthur to represent the United States at the coronation of the czar, reflecting political maneuvering within the Republican ranks.
Special despatch from Northampton Mass reports the semi annual Massachusetts Women’s Christian Temperance union meeting opening at Edwards church with 100 delegates from 42 towns. Mary A Livermore presided and papers urged temperance education, mother’s duties and tobacco hygiene while condemning liquor and tobacco use among youths.
Special Despatch to the Boston Post reports New York yacht builders Poillon launched the Fortuna for Boston man H. Hovey. The 109 ft long, 22 ft 6 in beam keel yacht, schooner rigged, displaces 165 tons and features rich interior fittings. The christening occurred in New York after a dawn launch witnessed by members of the New York Yacht Club and Boston friends.
A Boston Post report says the Tropic departed Philadelphia with possible filibusters and arms bound for Hayti. The US government may intervene as Haitian authorities await US action to arrest the captain and crew. Hayti reports peace in the country via a letter received by Munster Preston.
John L. Sullivan, the champion pugilist, shows signs of recovery and walks the streets and takes a carriage ride. He dismisses sensational illness reports as exaggerated. Dr Spear affirms he is not constitutionally impaired and promises peak condition for a May 14 Madison Square Garden fight with Mitchell.
The joint executive committee of trunk line freight managers and connecting roads met in New York on April 26 to review freight classification for eastern markets. Objections to current tables led to a plan for a revision by a new committee, with further reports expected at tomorrow’s session. No immediate rate changes were announced.
At the Flint mill fire in Fall River a 90 foot granite tower resisted demolition despite 25 one pound charges. Havana authorities say the embargo on five brands of American lard remains, but enforcement is lax. Deputy sheriffs fired on near Collins Texas while returning with horse thieves. two Mexicans found hanged. Peru reports a few skirmishes. Caceres promises a Lima raid if opulence rises. Fear grows among foreigners of more trouble. peace ideas progress. Philadelphia dispatch notes plans for the American Sunday School union anniversary at Hartford May 20. The Panama Herald reports a March 8 quake damaging Antisquia cathedral and many houses, injuring Santa Rosa church steeple, destroying Yarumal prison and 35 houses, destroying Aquadas town hall, injuring Abejirral church, damaging Tinagana palm huts, and causing rapid river level changes. Indians at Taya fear repeated quakes, and a large island at the Atrato mouth reportedly disappeared after a 1962 survey by the Firebrand.
Philadelphia report says Arch Street Opera House burned this morning after a gas stove explosion by the gallery steps. The blaze damaged wardrobes worth 3000 dollars and crushed seats as the roof collapsed. Loss estimated at 15000 with walls standing and front uninsured. New Haven Clock Company losses total 20000 from a fire started near veneering rooms, with 47000 of insured value on buildings. One worker fled from a second story window, but no employees were harmed.
The John F. Slater fund trustees agreed to spend 20000 during 1883 under Dr. Haygood. Preference given to schools training colored youth in trades enabling them to earn a living and become useful citizens. Haygood’s incomplete survey delayed action. next meeting set for October.
Captain Augustus G Hall of the Annie L Hall reports a tremendous live trunk turtle sighted March 30 at latitude 44 10 and longitude 33 near Grand Bank. The creature measured roughly 40 feet long and 30 feet wide with a 20 foot flipper span, eluding capture due to rough seas.
In municipal court Daniel J. Sullivan was arranged for breaking and entering at Rufus J. Brown’s shop at 1603 Washington Street. He claimed he was locked in the shop while in the water closet and was bound over to the superior court in 1200 dollars. Henry Lee, alleged silk thief, waived examination on larceny from C. F. Hovey and others and was held in 1500 dollars to the upper court.
In Little Rock Arkansas on April 26 the annual stockholders meeting elected J H Converse of Boston president of the Little Rock and Fort Smith and Elisha Atkins of Boston president of the Little Rock Mississippi and Texas. All other officers for both lines were re-elected.

The Montpelier Argus reports Wait & Co of Montreal sold butter to a Boston dealer last fall at 27 cents per pound after duties and freight. They then bought 165 packages in Boston at 16 cents, shipped to Montreal at 2 cents freight plus 4 cents duty, equal to their prior sale price. They now offer redelivery at a 5 cent loss per pound to Boston dealers, exploiting price gaps without storage costs.
Matt Louis of St. Louis has been tried four times for the murder of his wife. Convicted three times and sentenced to death twice before. Now awaiting execution on June 8, authorities expect the final outcome to be a hanging.

A 9 year old boy, Hirgeh Weston, fractured a leg from a falling plank on a vacant lot off Albany street.

The Casino Amusement Company offered its venue to J B Gomez, Nashville excursion chairman, for a monster benefit to raise funds for Massachusetts troops entering the competitive hill in May. The event, accepted, is set for Monday evening May 14 at the Casino with Welch and Shields, famed lightning grill zounines from the Montgomery Guards, as first volunteers to assist the soldier boys.
