Johnson Gets Time on Costs in Necklace Smuggling Case

Chicago April 24 Jack Johnson the negro pugilist appeared before a United States commissioner to pay a $1000 fine for concealing a necklace smuggled into the country. He sought 24 hours more to pay the $740 in costs including $655 for witnesses from New York who came but could not testify as Johnson pleaded not to contend.

Paris April 24 The French budget deficit for 1913 is estimated at 40 million dollars. To fund increased armaments, 1914 may require borrowing 200 million dollars, according to a Matin letter from Senator Emile Almond assigned to draft the budget committee report.

A city evening school report shows 29 312 pupils enrolled last term with 11 928 in elementary, 6 263 in high schools, and 1 126 in industrial and trade schools. Americans numbered 8 274 while others came from Europe Asia and Canada. In elementary grades the largest group aged 21 to 31 years with 3 097 pupils. over 1 000 were over 31 years old and 560 were 14 years old.
