Whitman Dead Inspector Manley A Whitman Dies in Dorchester

Inspector Manley A Whitman of Boston police headquarters dies at 5 o'clock yesterday morning at 20 Elmont street Dorchester after a three week illness from Bright's disease. Born in Oshkosh Wisconsin 182 and coming to Boston in 1866 he joined the police in 1878 and served in Division 4 for ten years later becoming a special officer then an inspector in the fourth division He leaves a wife and three children two boys and a girl The elder son is about 22 His widow is ill The funeral will be Tuesday with officers from head quarters and his old division in attendance

Volunteer Mass Meeting to Form Irish Brigade at Faneuil Hall

The Suffolk Hibernians chaired by William J. Cronin held a Parker House session to plan a mass meeting at Faneuil Hall at 8 pm. The aim is to unite existing Irish military companies into a single brigade and offer enlistment to unattached volunteers with music by the Hibernian Cadet Band and anticipated out of town company turnout.

Protest in London mass meeting on Trafalgar Square

In London on April 24 a mass meeting on Trafalgar Square protested Spanish actions in Cuba and the Philippines. About 600 Socialists and labor men attended with speakers Tom Mann Louise Michel and Athrope Tithington an American greeted with good old Yankees cries. The Building Trades Council voted to require union labor on jobs needing union men and formed committees to press authorities. The Typographical Union took no action on proposed constitutional amendments excluding employers and foremen, with the president calling the move unconstitutional. Weavers' Union votes to end strike in New Bedford

In New Bedford Massachusetts the Weavers Union voted 190 to 57 to end the strike and return to work. The Speeder Tenders' Union plans to stay out two more weeks or longer with support from Carders and Spinners unions. Mill firemen consider striking over a 10 percent wage cut, with a union meeting set for Tuesday night.
