Thomas Chandler Hardwick Harvard 1918 brother of Tack Hardwick former Harvard football star died after a short illness. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at his parents home 10 Chestnut street Quincy conducted by Rev William Grainger rector of Christ Episcopal Church. He had been with a New York banking house and was a member of many clubs at Harvard.

Fred eric Anton Eilers, renowned mining engineer and metallurgist, died at his Sea Cliff home at 78. Born in Nassau Germany, he settled in the United States in 1859 and served as deputy U S commissioner of mining statistics from 1869 to 1876. He held senior roles in major mining and smelting firms and belonged to several scientific societies. His son Karl, also a noted metallurgist, is an executive at the American Smelting and Refining Company.
April 22 report states the main power engine at the United States armory in Springfield was temporarily disabled by unknown persons who placed emery in the main flywheel bearings.
An emery failure in bearings was found when the night shift started the engine, prompting a shutdown of the plant for the night. Work began to fix the issue but operations will not resume until Monday afternoon or night. Officials report an inside job and a rigid investigation is under way.
Private Manuel Calzone of Milford a guard detail with the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment drowned in the Westfield River at Russell while crossing rapids. The boat with a companion overturned over a 50 foot dam. Calzone could not swim and drowned after leaping from the boat. The companion escaped by swimming ashore.
New York April 22 Jacob H Schiff, once opposed to Zionism, told a Century Theatre mass meeting of the League of the Jewish Youth of America that Jews should establish a home in Palestine after World War I emancipation. He warned oppression could fracture Jewish identity but urged loyalty to America to the 2000 attendees.
New York on April 22 reports Billy Sunday delivering his dynamic sermon and showman act. At two services 3615 attendees filled the Tabernacle with a large outdoor crowd of 5000 as Boston visitors joined the rally, creating a lively spectacle and strong excitement.

London reports Donegal and Lanfranc torpedoed without warning on April 17 with many wounded aboard. Of the Donegal crew and wounded, 12 are missing. Lanfranc carried both British and German wounded. 19 British and 15 Germans believed dead.
On April 17 the steamships Donegal and Lanfranc, carrying wounded to British ports, were torpedoed without warning. The Donegal had 29 missing British wounded and 12 missing crew presumed drowned. The Lanfranc carried 244 British wounded, 167 German prisoners, 52 medical personnel, and a crew of unknown size.
Myer Cohen of Summer Street Revere and Abraham Steinberg of West End were riding a motorcycle when brakes failed near Huntington Avenue. They collided with a fence at Huntington Avenue, Cohen was badly injured and taken to Peter Bent Brigham Hospital while Steinberg escaped unharmed.
Saran Bernhardt, who recently rallied after surgery, has relapsed and is again in a critical condition. Doctors issued a cryptic bulletin tonight confirming her status in New York.
Bulletin reports Madame Bernhardt was seriously ill last night and most of today. She rallied this evening with no temperature. A doctor stated the case is hopeless when asked outside the hospital, after an earlier bulletin had called her condition stationary.
A fire of undetermined origin followed by two blasts at a Seaboard Bi-Products Coke Company plant under construction near Kearney New Jersey caused one death and about 100000 dollars in damage. Two tanks near each other held 100000 and 150000 gallons of oil respectively.
Frank Veree a seaman aboard the Baycross docked at Battery wharf is severely wounded at the Relief Hospital. Jose A Solar, his shipmate, is jailed at the Hanover street police station charged with assault with intent to kill after a street confrontation sparked by a card game aboard the vessel.

In Yonkers New York on April 22 Rev Robert F Berry pastor of a local Congregational Church killed his wife Matilda Berry and his mother in law Caroline Bahr after a late quarrel over the war. He wounded Miss Bahr and then killed himself leaving a two word note Insane Prussians.
