Redding Connecticut mourns Mark Twain as villagers and nearby farmers gather to bid farewell. Tomorrow the body leaves for New York for services at Brick Church while business halts and tributes pour in from the river road and Stormfield.

Harvard Observatory notes describe Halsey’s comet rising at 3 08 this morning and 3 02 tomorrow, observable for about 12 to 24 minutes with moderate glasses, faint to naked eye as tails emerge, speed near 30 miles per second.

Louis K. Rourke, Panama Canal engineer, is named superintendent of streets to succeed Guy C. Emerson. Jeremiah J. McCarthy is appointed surveyor of port as fire commissioner. Samuel H. Borofsky is named trustee of children's institutions, succeeding Lee M. Friedman. Civil Service Commission confirms James H. Smyth as superintendent of printing and Robert P. Fowler as overseer of the poor. The commission did not report on all mayoral appointments. Emerson offered an advisory post if he stays at City Hall.

Governor Draper repeats a proposal to exempt Boston Railroad Holding Company bonds from taxes. Attorney General Malone says a Turth bill is unconstitutional. The governor now urges a bill allowing issuance of untaxed securities such as preferred stock by the holding company.
Representative Norman H. White criticized the Governor's message as untimely arguing the Legislature should decide on legalizing the $121,000,000 stock issued by the New Haven against Massachusetts law before addressing the Holding Company's securities guaranteed by the New Haven.
Albert Wolter, 19, found guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Ruth Wheeler, a 16 year old stenographer. After 1 hour 50 minutes of deliberation, the jury returned the verdict at 10:30 p.m., ending a rapid trial marked by horror. Wolter showed no emotion. he slept calmly in his cell during deliberations.
On April 22 Chicago experienced two hours of sudden darkness blamed by some on Halley’s Comet. Weather reports attribute the event to rain wind and smoke with darkness reported across the city. In one streetcar women grew hysterical and patrolmen were asked to calm fears in immigrant neighborhoods.
The last of 29 men indicted on April 1 by the federal grand jury in Washington for bucket shop activity was arrested in New York. Joseph H. Gatins, described as four years old, linked to William B. Price Co. of Baltimore, was seized at 71 Central Park West by Department of Justice agents and a U S marshal. He is said to be worth 10 million dollars.
Sensational charges were filed against Benjamin Ham foreman of the Hancock street yard of the paving division. He is accused on about twenty counts of falsifying time sheets to credit men for hours they did not work. Ham is suspended and to have a hearing set Thursday.
William J. Kelcher known as Big Bill was arrested after 5 pm by U S Marshals on charges of aiding and abetting George W Coleman in misapplying National City Bank of Cambridge funds. Laura M Atwood, a Bellevue Hotel resident and Kelcher friend, is credited with prompting the arrest.
Yesterday's results show American League games with Philadelphia 3 over Boston 0 and Cleveland 5 over Detroit 0. National League saw Philadelphia 6 over Brooklyn and Pittsburgh 3 over Boston. New York and St Louis had inconclusive or missing data.
