The Washington commentary notes American bloodshed at Veracruz as Mexicans fire on sailors and Marines who landed to seize the city. The US fleet bombards Mexican quarters driving rebels from the waterfront. Fletcher’s forces secure the port as casualties include Florida sailors and marines.
Marine Corporal Haggerty of Cambridge, a noted athlete and former Brookfield, Massachusetts resident, is named as the first American casualty. In the same fighting report Geisburn of Quincy is listed as wounded amid heavy Mexican street fighting.
The entry lists celestial events with Venus Mars Saturn visible at night and Jupiter in the morning, plus a new moon on April 25. It notes anniversaries for Ete Lindley Murray born in 1745 and Oklahoma settlement opening in 1889, with a 1894 Odessa bombardment date and modern lamp advisories for vehicles before 7 03.
Washington reports a fair and warmer pattern for eastern New York and southern New England with moderate southwest winds. Northern New England will see fair conditions Wednesday with warmer interior, then increasing cloudiness Thursday and a shift to south winds.
The Hamburg-American steamer Ypiranga, carrying ammunition for Huerta, signalled the U S flagship and placed herself under Rear Admiral Fletcher's orders. She will stand by tonight and the captain pledged not to sail beyond hailing distance tomorrow.

In Washington at 2 am the Senate continued an all night debate over giving the President power to act in Mexico. Senators Lodge and Root opposed, arguing the President favors Huerta over the Constitutionalists and calling for action to pacify all Mexico. An amendment declaring an act of war with the Mexican States was offered, risking conflict with Villa and the Constitutionalists as well as Huerta.
Secretary of the Navy and several Senators declared on the Senate floor that the United States is at war with the Republic of Mexico. The admission came as Daniels argued the Vera Cruz seizure was not war, but firing on Americans proved a state of war exists.
The Vera Cruz advance under Rear Admiral Fletcher leaves four American sailors dead. Killed were Coxswain Shoemaker, Corporal Daniel Haggerty of Cambridge Mass and Seaman Poisnett of the Florida, plus an unnamed sailor. Wounded include Leahy Schwartz Cameron Plese Geisburn and McMillan. Geisburn hails from Quincy Mass. Continued on Page S-Second Col.
Refugee Americans on the second section from Mexico City and a special train were held up along the line to Vera Cruz, likely by General Maas. Telegraphic links to Mexico City were cut and rail service may be disrupted. Several hundred Americans remain in Mexico City, including Charge d'Affairs Nelson O'Shaughnessy and his wife and child.
