SPECIAL TO THE POST WASHINGTON April 21 The House committee on invalid pensions reported a bill to pension officers soldiers sailors and marines held in Confederate prisons for thirty days or more The substitute would pension all surviving personnel who were prisoners of war for thirty days plus disabilities presumed from confinement not from misconduct and cap payments at one pension with $2 per day for every day of confinement for those imprisoned sixty days or more
The Treasury instructs Boston customs on how to classify wool nails. Nails from class 1 wool pay washed or scoured duty rates, with washed double and scoured triple rates. Nails from class 2 wool or mohair like hairs pay increased duties only if imported scoured, at three times the unwashed wool rate.
Pinkerton detectives arrested Oscar W Beebe in New York City last night as part of a chase that traced him from Hudson Street to Moncton Halifax and Shediac then back to the city. Beebe admitted his alias Owen W Barker and yielded after a witness identified him. Detectives say they are close to capturing the remaining gang member Kelley.
In Nerport Rhode Island on April 21 a Masonic celebration marked the visit of Grand Lecturer Sir Charles Harris of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In Salem Massachusetts on April 21 a Lawrence branch train collided with a freight train at Howe's crossing on the Boston and Maine line one mile from Middleton. Three freight cars were derailed and wrecked while the engine was damaged. Brakeman William Bushee was injured internally and several passengers were badly shaken.
