Fire blitzes hit city with multiple alarms
A busy day of fires caused by holiday wind left many blazes burning across Boston. The worst struck a four story freestone building at 20 Summer Street owned by A W Perry housing Mark Cross & Co harness dealers. The blaze, likely from a faulty electric wire, led Chief Garrity to order a second alarm and tied up much apparatus. Driver Flynn of Chief Garrity’s wagon was thrown from his team at School and Washington streets but sustained only minor injuries. Other incidents included a small blaze at 142 Atlantic Avenue and a roof fire at 376 Dorchester Avenue with minimal damage. A large two alarm fire at 24 Athens Street and surrounding structures caused about 1000 in damage. A separate 6600 damage blaze occurred at 175 Billerica Street Rexbury due to an incubator lamp. The day featured numerous fires and a busy fire department amid strong winds.
