Officials searched Spiegel & Co. at 101 and 103 Broad Street on a tip about revenue fraud. In the dumping room they found empty barrels with intact stamps and a tin box claimed as a private closet containing 45½ used customs stamps. The box led to a dispute over possession. The stamps carried $300 penalties each. Brooks filed a complaint with Commissioner Osborn.
A Hermosillo dispatch reports a migrating Apache band fought near Ures to Gambies with troops, claiming heavy losses. A wounded cavalryman identified a former U S agent L N Streeter as the Apache chief in one engagement, sparking orders for his capture led by Gov. Torres in Hermosillo.
Gen Joshua L Chamberlain former Maine governor and Bowdoin College president survived a delicate operation in the city on Thursday for a war wound. Dr Joseph H Warren and two Boston physicians performed the procedure with anesthetics. At 8 pm he had rallied and recovery is expected.
The coroner's jury in Lincolnville returns that Almatia Heal died by poison administered on or about the evening of November 11, 1652. The case rests for the present.
Henry division of Franklin Falls jailed 30 days for cruelty to a horse and taken to Concord for commitment. A pardon obtained by leading citizens brought him back on the evening express. The will of Mrs Clarinda Kk of Nashua files with provisions for Baptist and Missionary societies, with other legacies and a husband retaining legal rights. The Nashua estate includes sizable bequests to churches and missions. The supreme judicial court met in Ossipee on the 17th. Grand jury indictments included liquor sales and an assault with intent to kill. John White of Dee pled guilty to the latter and received three years in state prison. Probate records note wills of Mrs Crosby of Nashua and appraisers’ bequests to relatives and multiple Baptist organizations.
Silas M. Waite, former president and cashier of Brattleboro National Bank, arrived at his Brattleboro home Thursday night with counsel. The trip aims to allow examination of books and records in advance of arguments on an appeal from the bank’s judgment against Waite’s estate.

City National Bank of Dallas sued Park National Bank for 26119 12 balance on deposit. Jury failed to reach a verdict after trial before Judge Larremore. Park National claimed a counterclaim of 25661 with interest alleging Hardy lent funds while acting as Dallas bank president.
Large crowd of breeders and dealers attended the Jersey cattle sale at Fiftieth Street and Broadway. Bids were steady, with Sally Signal bought by Mr. Brooks of Princeton for 250 and Favorite of Avon sold to M. Rowley & Son for 250. H Palmer of Chester purchased several head including Gem of Cicero for 325, Milkinaid for 500, and Florence of Avon for 2200. The sale continues all day with six head of desirable stock offered.

An anti Whitmore group refused an ad mission to the democratic city committee on Wednesday night and issued an address to ward 12 citizens denouncing Whitmore and his adherents. The formation of an opposition city committee is being pushed citywide with about 100 men from various wards already pledged to the movement.
