San Luis Rey Mission Aims To Train Franciscan Missionaries

The San Luis Rey Mission near Oceanside California has been restored from near ruin and is now used as a college for training Franciscan missionaries. Founded in 1798 it converted 337 Indians within months and by 1826 baptized nearly 3000. The mission produced abundant crops and cattle, owes much to Padre Peyri who expanded buildings and founded the chapel at Pala with a renowned campanile.
