Charles Matteson senior Rhode Island Supreme Court justice won the chief justiceship by an 87 to 13 vote in the Legislature. Born Coventry Rhode Island March 21 1840 he studied at Providence Conference Seminary East Greenwich Academy and Brown University. He joined the Supreme Bench February 11 1875 succeeding judges Burgess and Potter.
Worcester case Thayer represented McQuaid in the Lilla Hoyle related matter. McQuaid challenged a $1000 fee for six months work. An auditor found the charge moderate. Jury trial returned verdict for Thayer for $1078.50. Thomas McQuaid testified.
