The Seamless Stocking Story and Its Modern Variants

A historical account traces the invention of the seamless stocking from 1589 with William Lee, detailing how the frame and later latch-needle developments led to two main systems: domestic seamless stockings made by power machines in the United States and imported seamless hosiery hand-knit in Europe. It notes the differences in construction, methods, and terminology, debunks claims about universal seamless production in the U.S., and argues for free trade in these textiles while highlighting the roles of Mills, American manufacturers, and European producers.
