Albany Argus summary of 100 days session and related notes

The Albany Argus surveys the hundred days session led by Seward’s reelection, the prohibitory liquor law, church property concerns, canal and appropriation bills, the omnibus supply, the mill and quarter tax, and a string of Whig platform resolutions. It notes lost bills on rail tolls for canals, taxing banks and corporations, canal repairs contracts, fugitive act nullification, canal company incorporations, and a proposed constitutional amendment enfranchising blacks, concluding that adjournment prevented further mischief and that results will show better state life. It also covers postmaster logs under new postage rules, a Cincinnati mob incident, Queen Victoria’s hesitant Windsor invitation to the Napoleons, a cautionary tale of an egotist snubbed in a New England office, a New Yorker’s cheap curiosities at the state house, and other brief notes on clergy, fashion, and local industries.
