The Hartford Times endorses a Dr. Wood paper arguing John Fitch invented the steamboat. The piece remarks Col. Prescott led at Bunker Hill and cites a statue as proof though acknowledging Gen. Putnam wrestled the Pomfret wolf, an amusements trope replaced by a Boston bear.

Many oddities and squibs from late 19th century chatter

A collage of humorous notes and observations from American papers. It mentions New York rag-pickers, a Connecticut coal accident, Dr Fields’s cheap explosive, Fourth of July celebrations, Archipelago de Haro fisheries, and satire on Pennsylvania’s 700 bills. It also cites banjo play and a Barnum stunt, a Boston lecturer on women's rights, a Baltimore prodigy’s life, a Turkish Kurdistan birth with strange traits, Harvard’s old discipline, and a wry forecast of student fines today.
