Washington April 15 President Roosevelt convened a Cabinet session to discuss Russia’s warning that wireless correspondents would be treated as spies and shot and that steamers with wireless gear would be seized as war prizes. The measure would mainly affect American and British reporters at the front.
Andrew Carnegie creates a five million dollar hero fund from US Steel bonds to aid dependents of those who lose lives saving others or heroes who are injured. A commission will award grants and medals, with provisions to support widows, children, and exceptional cases, conditioned on sober use and respectable conduct.
Russia asserts well known American writers including Richard Harding Davis Jack London Charles Palmer William H. Brill W. H. Colver H. Vandercook are targets of espionage accusations. Officials accuse these figures of covert spying and seek action against them amid wartime tensions.
A listing highlights groups praised for risking or aiding in peril across professions. Seamen, doctors, nurses, firemen, policemen, coast guards, railroad and steamship workers, and workingmen near machinery are named for their courage and duty in rescues and epidemics.
The Holyoke case centers on the deaths of four children from the Capistrand and Guertin families after March pork meals. The convention urges immediate steps for closer trade with Canada based on reciprocal duties and free lists. It cites leaders Baine Dingley and McKinley, reaffirms 1900 platform, and emphasizes that reciprocity must be detailed and mutually beneficial rather than a mere slogan.
