Lowell Address Draws Mixed Praise At Steinway Hall

A New York audience greeted Mr. Lowell’s Steinway Hall address with close attention and applause. Critics note he spoke as a poet and thinker, not an orator, lifting listeners to a calm, argumentative plane while deriding party demagoguery. The Tribune’s take on his tariff mention is debated, and comparisons to past political corruption are offered, with a reminder that public life was rougher in 1868.
