Struck Rogk Sound Steamer Continental Ashore in Fog
The Continental of the New Haven line ran aground near Hell Gate in thick fog after leaving East River pier 26 at midnight. It struck the sea wall at Nigger Point, Ward’s Island, lifting its bow onto rocks. Passengers, numbering fifty to sixty, were removed by a tug and relayed to New Haven by rail. Wrecking tugs and two derrick lighters operated but pulling off proved difficult at high tide. The vessel, built in 1860 in Brooklyn, is 286 feet long with 34 foot beam and 11 feet depth.

Born February 12, 1818 in Utica New York, Dana served in the US Navy, contributed landmark reports in zoophytes geology and crustacea, led Yale natural history, edited the American Journal of Science, and chaired AAAS in 184. He retired from teaching in 1893 leaving a widow, two sons, and two daughters.

Editor James W. Scott Dies in New York Hotel
James W. Scott editor and proprietor of the Chicago Times-Herald died suddenly of apoplexy in his Holland House room. He had arrived from Chicago with Mrs. Scott and their niece. Scott, a Wisconsin native born in June 183, helped found the Chicago Herald and Chicago Evening Post and led the Times-Herald merger. He served as United Press president and led American Newspaper Publishers Association presidencies. He helped found the World’s Columbian Exposition and held major roles there. His remains will be sent to Chicago tomorrow.
