La Roy Sunderland and the king of humbugs theory

In a March Post letter signed A. 4, the author discusses ancient beliefs in demons and spirits and analyzes the name La Roy Sunderland. He suggests La Roy may signal a double gender and a royal title among spirits, and proposes Sunderland’s surname derivation from d underland. The piece ends with satire on spiritualism and local political discourse.

State Credit and the Tunnel Debate Over Railroads

The piece argues against using state credit to finance a tunnel railroad that would rival the Western Railroad. It questions whether the tunnel project is safer or more beneficial, warns of risking state securities, and calls for a general law enabling all railroads to use state credit only if both lines can coexist and prosper. It questions the necessity and priority of a rival route and signals a forthcoming further discussion.
