Mexican citizens attack the 13th Cavalry at Parral following Carranza orders for U S withdrawal. One trooper is killed and many Mexicans slain by machine guns. Washington mulls Carranza demand and replies on next steps. Villa chase continues with no halt planned.
Elizabeth Child, prominent suffragist and philanthropist from Iton, Washington and New York, was granted an interlocutory decree of divorce from author-husband Charles Washburn Child on April 6 by Justice Daniel F. Cohalan of the Supreme Court. Outside of witnesses, the prince s and a few close friends, the ceremony details remain private.
Bentley Warren for the Massachusetts Street Railways Association told a legislative committee that street railways must raise net earnings by higher fares and lower expenses to justify a proposed tax cut. He noted fare increases or petitions on about half of the 2000 miles outside Boston in the past two years. City officials opposed the franchise tax reduction.
A British bark named Inverlyon, of 1827 tons built in 1904, has been sunk by a submarine. Twelve crew members were rescued, with the loss of others not specified in the received Lloyds report.
Washington officials say Berlin has virtually admitted a German submarine commander torpedoed the channel steamer Sussex with over twenty American passengers aboard. President Wilson and Secretary Lansing reviewed the submarine note and intend drastic action based on the proof.

Otto Melanson, 21 year old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Melanson of 54 Orchard street Lynn fell from the third story window of his home onto a concrete walk yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Lynn Hospital where doctors reported no fractures or apparent injuries. He was sleeping and appeared fine.
Patrolman Jesse Williams of the American District Telegraph extinguished a rag fire on the third floor of 81 Bedford Street last evening. The blaze, started by painter debris, caused no damage or loss.

President Wilson at a Jefferson Day banquet in Washington urged Americans to avoid a quarrel not of the United States choosing yet asked if the people were ready to go in where American and humane interests align and to withdraw when humanity's interests are conserved. The crowd cheered in response.
The President spoke on the European war and the Mexican question but gave no clear proposals. He blamed the Republicans for provincialism and asserted the Democratic party bears responsibility while emphasizing that America can lead the way in a time of need.
Washington April 13 Americ an troops in Mexico fought their first action with natives near Parral in western Chihuahua. Major Tompkins Seventh Cavalry pursued attackers as General Carranza garrison aided the defense. Secretary Baker reported unofficial word of one American cavalryman killed and machine gun use against Mexicans.
Mr. Baker said General Funston would act as needed to prevent further trouble in Mexico. The secretary hoped the Parral incident was local. Carranza noted deaths on both sides and Aguilar reported one American trooper killed with several civilians wounded.

Worcester reports that Lemuel H. Marlin will leave Boston University to become secretary of the Methodist Board of Education with headquarters in New York. The appointment follows the Saratoga Springs conference next month when Dr. Thomas Nicholson leaves the secretaryship to become a bishop. Marlin says he has no bishop ambitions and will accept the New York post.
The drive for Pr. Marlin as secretary of the board of education gained momentum at a New England conference in session here. It is practically certain he will be elected as one of the ministerial delegates tomorrow.
