Where shall I go and what am I American
A letter from Saurspury, dated 1855, argues a proposed constitutional amendment would disfranchise many, recounting family origins from Salisbury and Amesbury, with service in the U.S. military and a birth in New Brunswick. The writer asserts pure American lineage despite birth outside the United States and questions his status.

Niagara Trip Notes From New York to the Falls
The writer recounts a western ride from New York to Elmira and Niagara Falls aboard the Erie road. A toppled wood pile delayed travel, the Delaware river view impressed travelers, Amer ican Falls iced over, Goat Island sprang snow and slush, and a northeast snowstorm greeted the morning. Niagara hosts were noted, including Mr Griffin the landlord. An election in Niagara Town saw Gen Whitney Hindoo win supervisor over Porter fusionist, and Americans’ town officers won by a large margin.
