Uproar erupted as two Aldermen passed a lie in a session of the Board of Aldermen yesterday marking a rare rebuke. Alderman Giblin called Alderman Hare a deliberate liar amid a heated clash stemming from a two week old dispute and questioned his integrity as the meeting opened.
Alderman O Hare and Alderman Giblin sparred in a long session accusing each other of falsehoods and unpaid labor. The chair threatened to silence Giblin but both men apologized after about 45 minutes, then revived the quarrel claiming ultimatums and a political “gold brick” exchange.
The Kenley, a British steamship from the Philippines, delivered what is said to be the record cargo of hemp ever received in Boston. The ship's voyage was rough, with gales delaying for 12 days and totaling a five day wait before arrival, as reported by Captain Wilson.
Miss Fannie Ashton aged 19, a bookkeeper at a paint shop, narrowly escaped asphyxiation when a rear jet was left open yesterday. She was found by a patrolman and taken to City Hospital.
Ellen Devine displayed quick wit and nerve last Saturday night when a thief named Harry Gordon attempted to rob her. She grabbed him by the collar and clung until a patrolman arrived, and Gordon received a six month sentence in the House of Correction.
Newport dispatch reports the Chester holding a near eight mile lead at half distance in the 24 hour scout cruiser race. Salem second and Birmingham out with engine trouble earlier and heading to New York. Chester set the pace from Block Island at 10 45 this morning.
Captain Fred M. Whiting of the Coast Artillery and Lieutenant B J McCarron of the Seventh Infantry deny charges at a secret two defendant court martial in the adjutant general office. Whiting faces conduct unbecoming charges while McCarron is accused of misreporting rifle team strength and pay muster. Proceedings were held in secrecy and the outcome was anticipated.

C M Dowd a baggagemaster on the New York New Haven Hartford line was struck by an engine at South Station yesterday afternoon and died half an hour later at Emergency Hospital. He was about 60 and resided on Harvard Street Dorchester.

Attorney F I Norton said Mrs Claudia Hains will not testify after an interview with District Attorney Dewitt of Queens County New York. She had understood she could not testify under New York law and has decided not to testify.
Philadelphia defeated Boston 8 to 1 in the season opener at Shibe Park. Plank held Boston to five hits as Aréllanes started for Boston and Ryan relieved. Murphy led Athletics with four hits while Boston’s batting and fielding were cited as ragged observations from the opener.
Plank’s masterly pitching and Murphy’s terrific batting set the tone as McInnis appears in the Athletic lineup for his first major league game marking an notable debut.

One vote ended the House bill aimed at banning sale by the bottle or can in Boston saloons. Speaker Walker ruled the bill not properly before the Legislature and the measure would have returned to committee. Grady of Ward 6 argued the bill rested on a general petition and could not be limited to Boston.

Harvard's athletic committee accepted a gift offer from the class of 1879 to fund completion of the stadium. The plan calls for cement columns and a roof over the top promenade, with the Athletic Association matching funds over five years. Gloucester youth Stuffy McInnis, age 19, played his first major league game for the Athletics at short. He singled in his first American League at bat and made an error on his first chance, the only misplay. Washington defeated New York 4 to 1 as Smith pitched well and drew the big crowd. detailed scores on page 8.
New York mourned Lieutenant Joseph Petrosini of the New York police department murdered in Italy while on secret service. Thousands lined Fifth Avenue from St Patrick's Cathedral to the cemetery as the funeral cortege passed. At the grave the widow sobbed and collapsed, nearly throwing herself into the coffin before restrained.
Malden April 12. Joseph Magulsky was arrested at 7 30 pm for creating a disturbance after delivering a heated speech near Newton and Franklin streets. Police interrupted the crowd as Magulsky railed against President Taft and Socialism, prompting the arrest.
Rome April 12 Mount Etna is not in eruption though earlier reports stated so. Latest advices from Catania indicate no fear of an imminent earthquake and no immediate danger is felt.
The sealing steamer Decapo with a crew of 30 is not heard from for weeks and is feared lost between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland last week. A search will be conducted immediately to determine the crew fate.
Newton notices the death of Samuel S. Whitney aged 61 of 29 Elmwood Street at his home. He is described as believed to be the youngest Civil War veteran in the Bay State. The report notes his residence and the date of death as stated above.

Washington April 12 The Senate amendments to the Payne bill reverse imported glove and hosiery duties to Dingley rates and lower hat and bonnet levies while reducing biscuits and wafers duties. By restoring barley and barley malt rates and cutting coffee substitute taxes and placing cocoa on the free list the amendments aim to gain popular support.
The amended tariff bill moves to Senate consideration starting Thursday after a floor agreement. The finance committee met with Democratic members at 10 this morning and voted to report to the Senate today, with Republicans in favor and Democrats opposed. Aldrich presented the bill, noting limited revenue gain and that further luxury tax increases are expected.
